used lens pricing?

I've decided that one of my must have lenses for my M8.2 is going to be a 28mm 2.8 Elmarit and I've been pouring over the internet doing some research. The thing that I'm puzzled by is the "2nd Version" Canada lenses are being listed at $1600-$1800. The new ASPH version, 6-bit coded are in stock everywhere for $1995.

So, the latest version which is considerably smaller, 6-bit coded, comes with Passport warrantee, and has ASPH elements sells shiny new for just a couple hundred $$ more than a "minty" boxed Canada version?

Why does this not make sense to me? Is there something I don't know about the 2nd version?

It's almost likely a "collectable" thing--the age and boxed/minty status are pushing its price up. Or, it's just unreasonably priced, which happens.

It is unlikely that it's affecting price, but many forum members have noted that there is a significant difference between many of the modern designs and older designs regarding contrast/drawing. (E.g., older designs are much less contrasty, which gives one the ability to bump contrast in post as one likes--while the look of shots from modern lenses cannot be "decontrasted.") I've seen this behavior especially with my 1960s 90mm Summicron and 1953 Elmar 5cm f/3.5. Very low contrast compared to modern designs. Not bad or good, just different.

Me? If in your shoes, and if my first lens, I'd buy the brand new thing, with its modern rendering characteristics, three-year passport warranty and 6-bit coding. The only hang-up for me would be that I'd probably be looking at the Summicron f/2 as well and wondering if I could afford that lens, instead. Big jump in price to get that one, though.

You can have a look here (similar link to the other posters' link, but with details about your lenses):

Thanks!
