mdozier Posted February 2, 2010 Share #1 Posted February 2, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) The covering on my M6 has begun to peel up at the corner. I did a bit of searching but I'm hoping to get a specific recommendation. Can I just use a dab of any quality glue product under the loosened bit and clamp it down or should I do more extensive restoration? Is there a specific glue product recommended? Any assistance is much appreciated. Thanks, matt

jacobh Posted February 3, 2010 Share #2 Posted February 3, 2010 Can I just use a dab of any quality glue product under the loosened bit and clamp it down or should I do more extensive restoration? Is there a specific glue product recommended? Thanks, matt Hello Matt, Yes there are more specific recommendations available but I need to search a bit to find them back. Generally one wants a glue that is re-soluble and also is not so strong that the bond becomes more or less permanent because then the leatherette can no longer be removed without damage to it. One source recommended to take a rubber compound contact glue and thin it 1 to 5 or so. I will check my files and come back later. Cheers,
spydrxx Posted February 3, 2010 Share #3 Posted February 3, 2010 I've used Pliobond in recovering cameras. The only downside is the smell is strong for a couple of weeks.

mdozier Posted February 3, 2010 Author Share #5 Posted February 3, 2010 Oops, Spydrxx, our posts crossed. Thanks, I checked on Pliobond, do you use the general purpose? matt
jacobh Posted February 7, 2010 Share #6 Posted February 7, 2010 Hello Matt, Regret to say I have (so far) not found the reference I was looking for. Pliobond ,as others have advised, may be ok. I do not know it but the name suggests something flexible which is good. If it is a contact cement type it does not need clamping. Diluting with appropriate thinner and applying with a disposable artist brush allows to apply it very sparingly, which I consider advisable. Contact cement which has to pre-dry before pressing it into place also prevents excess glue to ooze out at the rim when pressing the covering into place. Hope this helps. Success, Jaap Stil. marknorton Posted February 7, 2010 Share #7 Posted February 7, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) What's the condition of the covering generally? You might think of recovering it using one of the fine covers from CameraLeather.com; easy to do and I'd recommend the kid leather option though there are more grippy alternatives. If you look in the M8 forum, you'll find threads where some of us did this to our M8s. If you want to keep the existing cover, it's important that it's not stretched (or torn, of course) and a simple impact adhesive should be fine. You would apply the glue sparingly to the back of the fabric, wait until tacky and then press into position, holding the fabric down using paper masking tape overnight. Brand names vary of course, but here in the UK, I'd recommend Bostik - probably best to go to a hardware store and select the glue which fits the use profile I described. I'm sure your local Home Depot would be the place to go. Don't be tempted to use a glue which sets rock hard or super-glue which in my experience is anything but except in quite specific applications. Also, apply the thinnest layer of glue you can so that excess does not come out at the edges when you press the fabric in position. You may find warming the glue will make it more workable. jacobh Posted February 8, 2010 Share #8 Posted February 8, 2010 Matt, If you have not already done so you may wish to visit the Classic Camera Repair Forum; http://kyphoto.com/cgi-bin/forum/discuss.cgi , and jump to the restoration chapter. WRT Pliobond, make sure you get the contact cement type based on dissolved synth. rubbers. Success, Jaap Stil
mdozier Posted February 8, 2010 Author Share #9 Posted February 8, 2010 Thanks for the advice and the link. The covering is in quite good shape apart from the corner which has peeled up. It's kind of stiff and I catch it occasionally when handling. I'm going to just try to re-glue the corner down. It seems there are several Pliobond rebranded products available under other names. I'll report back if there's any interest or anything to learn. Thanks again, m
