jamriman Posted January 30, 2010 Share #1 Posted January 30, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello, I'd like some advice about a project I started back in 2001. Having experienced the calamity first hand I have been photographing ground zero but stopped a year are or so after. Now I work in the area and pass by every day. I've been shooting with a 35 pre cron and a 40 rokkor. I found both lenses kind of wide since I am use to the M8. I'd like to use a 50. I have a 50 lux asph lhsa but find it too heavy to commute with everyday. I was thinking of a 50 summarit to keep it light so I can bring 2 lenses with me. Any advice on lenses or otherwise would be appreciated. Here is a link to just some of my many shots in 2001. Thanks! Bo_Lorentzen Posted January 30, 2010 Share #2 Posted January 30, 2010 jamriman, Sounds like you have already done the ground work for a great collection of images. The Summarits are generally VERY good and sharp lenses, you points out the other beautiful part of any summarit lens, they are SMALL and LIGHT. so if sticking it in your pocket is the goal, this is the lens. I don't have one, but from what I have seen you will not be disappointed with the lens performance, naturally it is not as fast as a 1.4 lens would be, but you already know this and am making a deliberate choice to fit your needs. . Double Negative Posted January 30, 2010 Share #3 Posted January 30, 2010 A 35 and a 50 sound ideal. Perhaps even something longer, since you can't easily get down into the tub and it would help to eliminate any fencing in the photos (shoot wide open to blur it out). I have a 75 summarit for this. I already posted a WTB add on other forums. Thanks again!
haroldp Posted January 30, 2010 Share #5 Posted January 30, 2010 Consider the 50mm - Elmar-M f2.8, which is very good and collapses for carrying. Good samples can be had on ebay etc.

haroldp Posted January 30, 2010 Share #7 Posted January 30, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks. Is there any obvious difference in character? The 50 2.8 elmar looks to my eyes much like the 50 summicron up to f2.8 (of course) (which I really like). It is not as analytically sharp as the 50 summilux asph. All three great lenses. My favorite 'walking around cities ' single focal length lens is the 35 series 4 (pre asph) summicron. I also use the asph 35 and am seriously conflicted between the two versions. Another case of different, who knows which is better. With both 50 and 35 lengths, I generally like the pre-asphs for 'people', and the asph versions for 'things'. If I keep this up I will soon begin to dribble which will hurt me socially.. regards ... Harold
cheewai_m6 Posted January 31, 2010 Share #8 Posted January 31, 2010 what about a 50mm cron? they're not big either. a little bit faster than a summarit. the summicron is 10mm longer and 10g heavier. according to leica. not that there's anthing wrong with the summarit. it's just the summicron didn't get mentioned.
