markpsf Posted January 22, 2010 Share #1 Posted January 22, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I was told by one person that the only solution is contacts...either contacts or forget the camera! I wear progressive lenses...thin...wire rimmed glasses. Will I be unable to use these cameras while wearing glasses? My distance vision isn't bad so I might get by but would need glasses to easily read the LCD screen and other controls. I don't want contacts. I do want an M8! dpattinson Posted January 22, 2010 Share #2 Posted January 22, 2010 Many people wear glasses and shoot with M Leicas. Distance vision is not so important, as the effective distance of the rangefinder patch is around 2 meters if I recall correctly. That is the distance at which you need to have clear vision so that you can focus properly. Wearing glasses, you may not be able to see the widest set of framelines* (24mm on the M8), however that's not an insurmountable problem as you can get an external viewfinder if you really need accurate framing with the widest FOV. * this may be academic on the M8, as the framelines are not accurate in the first place
lars_bergquist Posted January 22, 2010 Share #3 Posted January 22, 2010 I do. No problem with the right spectacles. Mine are progressive, i.e. the kind that vary in focal length from long near the top of the lenses, to short close to the lower rim. This way you can easily find where against the lens to press the eyepiece rim, in order to have the right correction to see the frame lines sharply. Very soon this becomes instinctual: I always get it right at the first attempt. This is the way to go. Do not experiment with screw-in correction lenses. With progressive specs you do always have sharp eyesight both for the surroundings and for the finder. With a correction lens, you will likely need to put the glasses on for orienting yourself. The epitaph "He was run over by a bus while taking the picture of his life" would be rather too funny. The only problem is that your eye distance increases. Use thin rims. I have a bit of a problem with seeing the left and right edges of the 28mm field without 'looking around the corner', but I bought my 28 for the M8 only, and now I'm going to sell it. And correction lenses are not completely lossless, either. The old man from the Age of Horn-rimmed Specs
