35mm Summarit - which filter

Either the Leica UV/IR-Cut or B+W 486 filter will work just as well. If you get a hood for the Summarit, you may find that the B+W filter needs to be removed to unscrew the ring, whereas it slips over the Leica filter without difficulty.

Thanks Nicole:

But I've been told that I might have to remove the front lens ring to get the hood on anyway?

Since I don't have the lens yet I'm just trying to picture this.

Hi Mark,

Yes, I have the Leica filter on my Summarit, and the ring unscrewed without fouling the filter. But maybe I was just lucky. :) It's probably best to remove the filter anyway to remove the ring, as unless you use a filter wrench to unscrew the ring, you'll get a better grip without the filter in place. You do have to unscrew the cover ring to fit a hood though.

I feel like I am failing Summarit 101 here.

Could you please walk me thru the steps.

I'm not clear on this.

Clearly mechanically challenged!

Remove the filter. Remove the cover ring

Then what?

Put the filter back on and then the hood?

Maybe if this was all in front of me I'd have a better chance.

The lens comes early next week.

I'm deciding now whether to get the hood, tho that seems to be a good idea, and then which filter.

Grazie.

Don't worry. We've all been there at sometime or another.

To put it simply, the hood for the 35mm or 50mm Summarit is a screw on type.

To fit it, you need to remove the ring at the front of the lens that covers the thread that the hood screws onto. You may have to remove the filter in order to do this. This ring may be quite tight at first, and if you have a filter wrench it will help. Otherwise, an elastic band can help with the grip. Just don't squeeze too hard.

Anyway, once the ring has been unscrewed and stored away safely (You may wish to put it back someday.), replace the filter if you removed it earlier, and then fit the hood over the filter and screw it into place. It's much easier to do than to describe really. :)

You're great Nicole...

A good teacher (and I train them!)

I'm now almost there.

What I hear you saying is that the problem with the BW filter is that it may not fit as well with the hood, ergo getting that filter might be a risk.

Is that correct?

If so I can now graduate to my next problem and thread entry!;)

Hi Mark,

I'm pleased to be of help.

You should be Ok with the B+W filter, as far as the hood is concerned, it's just the very small tolerance on the ring may be an issue. I believe that the B+W filter is ever so slightly thicker, and that can be all the difference needed between the ring sliding over it, and it seizing. I believe that the hood itself has a bit more leeway in this area.

Again, congratulations on your new Leica, and I'm sure you will have lots of enjoyment with using it. :)

Well it still sounds like a gamble then and I'm not much of a gambler.

But I haven't heard of people having problems with the B+W fitting on the lens.

Mark

I have the Summarit and the B&W filter, no issues.

So here is what I can share about the filter and the hood.

Take off the lens cap

remove filter ring

install B&W 486 filter

Screw on shade

Shade has its one slip on lens cap

I keep the original lens cap and filter ring in the box from the lens for when and if I go to sell it.

The shade fits fine over the B&W filter product. I really enjoy this lens.It actually may not be as fast as other lenses but I enjoy the images it produces. I like how compact it is. I have not slipped it on my M2 yet, I image I will need to remove the uv/ir for color film but do not know if it will effect Ilford Delta 100 B&W film.
