Leicaflex SL finder problem

I have just taken delivery of a Leicaflex SL. The camera is generally very clean and seems to be functioning. I have one problem. Looking through the view finder I see ill defined blotches that are a little distracting when viewing plain surfaces. I am familiar with well defined dust spots on other cameras but these are new to me. They remind me of those floaters you get in your eyes when one is not too well. I thought maybe something in the prism. Anyway if anyone can help I'd be grateful.

You are right with your guess that there might be something wrong with the prism. The prism has a silver coating which when getting older might get spots in the same way as older mirrors do. If you look into the viewfinder from a distance of 20 or 30 centimetres you will see these blotches as dark spots. The only solution to fix the problem is to have the prism replaced (or live with the blotches). Unfortunately the prism (which I believe is still on stock at the Leica Customer Service in Solms) is somewhat expensive (I think approx. 200 Euros).

Best regards

Bernd

Chris,

I also have a SL that comes back from Solms * for revision (see the link)

As said Berni, I corrected my answer because I misunderstood.

It is possible that you need to change the microprism and it costs quite expensive

I tried your test - viewed at a distance the spots are well defined as you suggested. Despite the blotches I enjoyed using this old work horse today. Maybe worth spending some money on a refit as in all other dimensions it is a fine camera - but the refit may cost more than the camera

Many thanks, Chris
