Chuck Albertson Posted January 10, 2010 Share #1 Posted January 10, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Someone may have already posted about this, but the Financial Times Web site had this article FT.com / Reportage - The disappearing darkroom about an exhibit of photos of professional darkrooms in London, some some still around. I didn't see it in the print edition.

chris_livsey Posted January 10, 2010 Share #2 Posted January 10, 2010 More here and of a larger viewing size. And I thought my old darkroom was a cluttered mess Richard Nicholson Photography - 'Last One Out, Please Turn On the Light' Best quote from Richardson "With film I had a network of contacts across London and I felt embedded in the city. In comparison, digital feels disembodied."
Gentleman Villain Posted January 10, 2010 Share #3 Posted January 10, 2010 Chris, that is a great quote. very interesting @ the OP, thanks for posting the article THe part that jumps out at me is the use of the term Luddite. Why do film people keep thinking that they are being replaced by technology? They really aren't....what is happening is that a market that used to be mainstream is now a "niche market"...so the real challenge is learning to serve a niche market rather than a mainstream market. Film guys need to stop assuming such a defensive position. Digital shooters are the ones that should be on the defense. Maybe the digital guys can try to explain the cool factor of working in the same medium as birthday-picture-taking-soccer-moms?
holmes Posted January 17, 2010 Share #4 Posted January 17, 2010 I take your comments come from the UK. Here in the US, I have "pro" darkroom that just recently expanded it size considerably. I have used them for years for all my 'wet' needs. So I'm not sure just how much this is based on needs by country rather than the entire photo world. tobey bilek Posted January 17, 2010 Share #5 Posted January 17, 2010 The comraderie is now the internet for digital. Still there, just different. Took a few pics to a pro lab a few weeks ago and they do laser prints on photo paper. I got into a color mgt discussion and they explained how to get their profile an install it in my computer and do soft proofs. I purchased and calibrated with an EYE ONE and the soft proof looks like the original. I am good to go. There is still a thrill in seeing a Leica neg come up in the Dektol though. My darkroom is still functional.
