Leica Lens information resource

I've been considering buying some used Leica glass for my M8. I notice there are usually many versions of the same lens but I haven't found a comprehensive resource for information - sometimes it's hard to find out even the filter size, and as the sellers are scattered far and wide it's not practical to see or test the lenses before purchase.

Is there a good source of information online, or a book that can be recommended? At a minimum I would want to know physical details like size, weight, filter, years of manufacture. Better yet would be some information on the visual characteristics of the lens, best apertures etc. All information gratefully received!

Edited to add - as soon as I posted I discovered the wiki linked to this forum - looks like it might be what I need, though I'm not sure how comprehensive it is...

hi,

perhaps you will find the page by Erwin Puts (tao of Leica) useful (Home).

there is also the page by Reid (http://www.reidreviews.com), but you must pay for entering.

the physical data of the lenses can be seen in the pages of stores (MEISTER CAMERA - Leica-Spezialist seit 1925 - Start , for instance).

Regards,

Manolo

Brian Bower has written a number of books (including one for the M8) The M8 book in particular has a great deal of the information you are after in one handy book. The cost is about £20 and worth every penny imho.
