James R Posted January 9, 2010 Share #1 Posted January 9, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Background: I use Nikon's CLS with my D3 and multiple SB800/900s. I general keep my camera set on rear curtain sync, which Leica refers to as 2nd shutter curtain. I can use my SB800, but, want i-TTL functionality (whatever Leica calls it) for certain situations. Also, I need to be able to bounce the flash and use it off camera. The Leica branded flashes all seem to have very slow recycle times. What is the best flash to take advantage of the M9, while not shooting in the manual mode? Any other suggestions?
Advertisement Posted January 9, 2010 Posted January 9, 2010 Hi James R, Take a look here M9 and Flash - Feedback. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
ho_co Posted January 12, 2010 Share #2 Posted January 12, 2010 James-- Since no one else has responded, I'll drop in. I don't yet have an M9 and do almost no flash with my M8. But there have been a number of threads on the very topic you raise, one of them current: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m9-forum/111520-flashes.html. There was also a long thread in response to Sean Reid's review of the SF-58: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m9-forum/101461-reidreview-review-leica-sf58-flash-unit.html. And using the search function, I'm sure you'll find a lot of chat on the matter. As I understand it: 1) Nikon's CLS is extremely sophisticated and unmatched. 2) If you want a dedicated flash for the M9, you're dependent on either Leica or Metz. I don't know whether the external power pack for the Metz will work with the SF-58. You could probably get that information from Metz. Good luck!
