Aperture and DMR/M8 RAW files

There is an update due very soon (10.4.9) I believe which is likely to be the last update before 10.5 comes out spring 2007. So if it is not in the update then ....... :-(

Actually, depending on a release date for 10.5, it is possible that the there could be 10.4.10, 10.4.11 and so on.

Also, it should be noted that additional camera RAW support is not tied to Mac OS X updates and interval release dates. There are a group of files within Mac OS X that contain the data for RAW camera support, Originally Apple updated these files together as part of Mac OS X updates but, technically, they have always been able to be changed independently, which is what Apple is now doing through the "Digital Camera RAW Support Updates."

Therefore, new RAW camera file support is not contingent on either Aperture or Mac OS X updates and can be provided in a more timely fashion as support for individual RAW camera files are developed.

There's no guarantee that there will ever be Leica RAW support in 10.5 either, don't forget...

Has anyone emailed anyone at Solms? Leica UK think that it's Apple's problem.

"
It was hoped in the past that Apple would integrate DNG compatibility into their software and this was confirmed in conversations with them at Photokina, but I guess we are waiting on Apple."

is what I was told, but it would be interesting to see what Solms think.

I have made contact with a well informed contact in Germany and have been told that Apple are indeed working on support for M8 DNG files. Timescale for delivery is unknown, I'm afraid, but good things come to those that wait...

:)

I assume that if the M8 is supported, so will the DMR.

After updating, I tried to download DNG files in Aperture. It's kind of wired! Aperture sees the file and read the metadata of the camera, including the lens, focal length, iso etc. but the picture displays only at 320X240 pixel. I am confused. Maybe somebody could enlighten me.

Thanks, Giulio

An M8 DNG file contains a small preview TIFF file. Aperture displays this file.

My 2 cents to Apple about Aperture.

Market reach - further photographic history

I think Apple and the Aperture team should think twice about the cameras Aperture support through RAW conversion.

First of all it´s the pros who mainly use RAW format, but Aperture mainly only supports mainstream DSLRs, and mostly starter cameras. Wouldnt´t it be nice to have nice art by famous photographers enhanced, organized and exported through Aperture instead of Adobe taking this market ?

You already call Aperture part of your Pro series of software while the most famous photographs taken by pros through the 1900s were Leica cameras. The long awaited Leica M8 and the Leica Digilux 3 is however not supported by Aperture.

Any amateur with a new Canon 400 will be interested in Aperture because their camera is supported... their need however is just for Iphoto.. There´s a whole forum over at http://www.leica-camera-user.com (over 10000 registered users) liking Aperture only sad that Apple doesn´t support Leica M8 and Leica Digilux 3. So Adobe is mentioned as an alternative all the time. This is especially sad when polls on the forum shows that almost all of the Leica users use a Mac. Their both a bit more expensive than the rest but they do the job better. Shame to see Apple miss this oppurtunity to be part of further photographic history though.

Sorry about the poor english and the generally poor composition, just emotional about it :)

Thanks, Andy! My 3 yr. old iMac isn't fast enough to run Aperture, I'm stuck with iPhoto until I upgrade to a G5. My M8 purchase really depends upon Apple stepping up and

adding the M8 to their list of Aperture friendly cameras. Feedback is important!
