Cyan Corners vith firmvare ver. 1.09

I Have a "fixed" M( with firmvare version. 1.09). There is no banding and i have not observed the green bloobs. However, when using my camera - also in sunlight - I have a very inconsistent auto whitebalance and I also observe both the occational (frequent) magenta cast as well as the wrong colour rendering of black syntetic fabrics.

Using a IR filter (B+W F-pro) on my Summilux 28mm (with 6 bit coding) seems to solve the prolems with magenta cast and discolouration. And the IR filter also seem to stabilize the Auto White balance. However, the IR filter introduces cyan corners on my images.

With the filter on the lens there is a slight red glow when observed from an oblique angle - but this is really nothing and should bother only a few.

All the above are as to be expected:

Now my questions are these:

Is the new firmvare version expected to fix the Cyan corners introduced by IR filters om wideangle lenses.

If yes will I then have to "tell the camera" (dial in) that a IR filter is being used.

And is it correct that the IR filters will introduce cyan corners when used on wideangle lenses on FILM cameras also:confused: :):) .

Thank you in advance

Sincerely

Peter

Peter--

1) In regard to film cameras: Yes, the IR filters remove some of the red at the edges of wide-angle lenses, leaving cyan.--However, you don't need the IR-cut filters on film cameras because films aren't supersensitive to IR. So you can take the IR filters off and not worry about it.

2) In regard to whether the new firmware will correct for the cyan corners: We don't know but we think it might.

The camera firmware already corrects for vignetting when you use coded lenses. Leica has also said they recommend the use of IR filters at all times on the M8. So it would be reasonable to expect them to put the cyan correction into the next firmware version. That is, IF you're using coded lenses with coding detection turned on, WE HOPE that the new firmware will correct for vignetting (as it already does) AND for the cyan corners/edges encountered with wide-angles. If this is the case, the camera would automatically assume that you are using IR filters; though of course, Leica could add that question to the menu in an updated firmware release.

We'll find out soon, when Leica tells us what they've done in the next version of the firmware. :)

Peter,

do you have the lens code detection turned on? Also, I presume you mean Summicron rather than Summilux. Finally, there *must* be a switch somewhere for the IR filter, otherwise the camera would introduce magenta corners with lenses without filters. Unless it autodetects, but I doubt that.

Seems clear the cyan correction is required when wide-angles are used with IR filters. The slight red you are seeing when you view the lens obliquely is red that's not making it through to the sensor, hence the cyan. Leica think correction is required up to 35mm. We don't yet know what options there will be for users with uncoded lenses.

Scott/Sean have shown there is some cyan correction in there already to correct for filtering in the sensor but we expect further correction and the option to specify whether an IR filter is being used or not.

Does your Lens Detection menu item just have two entries - Enabled, Disabled or is there one or more additional entries?

Thank you for your replies

First of all, Yes I meant the summicron. Second lenscode detection is turned on but there are still (slightly) cyan corners.

And no. In firmvare ver. 1.09 there are no way you can "tell" the camera wheter you are using a filter or not. Lens code detection can be turned on or off that is it.

Again thank you for your helpfull ansvers.

And yes, apart from the issues with IR filtering, the camera produces the most beautiful images. I am so far a very happy customer

Sincerely
