novice9 Posted January 4, 2010 Share #1 Posted January 4, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Can anyone advise as to how these compare? I specifically need a series 8 drop in UV filter. Leica doesn't make one at the moment, but dealers still have no ones the shelves from when they last made them, around $110. B+W will make one up for $105, MRC. I'd rather get the Leica now and not wait 6 weeks, but as far as I understand its not multi-coated and I recall reading somewhere that the B+W brass mounts are superior to what Leica uses. Any help would be appreciated. Thx.
Advertisement Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 Hi novice9, Take a look here Leica UVa vs. B+W MRC filters?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
peter_n Posted January 4, 2010 Share #2 Posted January 4, 2010 I'd get the B+W MRC filter as I've read various reports about where Leica sources its filter glass, variously single-coated from B+W, Hoya, etc., etc. You might also want to check and see if Heliopan makes the filter you want, they also are quality. Brass rings have the reputation of never binding, but I think that reputation is earned when the lens is also brass. B+W also make alloy ringed filters with identical glass and sell them into Asia. novice9 Posted January 4, 2010 Author Share #3 Posted January 4, 2010 Heliopan does (though still a customer order) and considerably cheaper than B+W, but does not say anything about multiple coatings.... ?
peter_n Posted January 5, 2010 Share #4 Posted January 5, 2010 If you'd rather not wait for 6 weeks get the Leica now. If it doesn't suit you order the B+W and when it comes sell the Leica on. If it has "Leica" on it you'll have no problems selling it.
