mark_a_h Posted July 7, 2006 Share #1 Posted July 7, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Does anyone use the Leica mini Tripod 14100 with 14110 1/4" ballhead with their D2? I'm looking for a mini pod for canoe trips. I didn't have one on my last trip and I sure could have used it. I will pay the extra $ for the Leica if it is indeed a great tripod and ball. some photos: http://web.mac.com/mah9/iWeb/Photography/Wabakimi.html
Advertisement Posted July 7, 2006 Posted July 7, 2006 Hi mark_a_h, Take a look here Leica mini tripod. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
marknorton Posted July 7, 2006 Share #2 Posted July 7, 2006 Yes, I use both, classic designs and the quality of the 14110 especially stands out. The tripod is easy to adjust, folds pretty flat and works well. Ideal support for a D2, both table top and, for example to bbrace the camera against a wall. ho_co Posted July 7, 2006 Share #3 Posted July 7, 2006 I use the tabletop tripod & large ball head as well, and recommend both. The combination is great in churches & museums, where there's low light and you have something to set it on, though it obviously won't replace a full-size tripod. I've also used it braced on my chest, as well as against a wall as Mark mentions. The ball head is amazing. Small enough to fit into your pocket (if need be), but because of its ridged ball, as sturdy as ball heads many times that large. Sturdy enough for a camera much heavier than the D2. In my case, the tabletop tripod and ball head are always in my camera bag. The two together are a great combination, and the head can also serve on a standard tripod, so long as the tripod has a quarter-inch screw (three-eighths inch won't work). On a recent China trip I also used the ball head on a compact Gitzo tripod for my M system. --HC
marknorton Posted July 7, 2006 Share #4 Posted July 7, 2006 That's the key - portability. No point having a tripod if it's too big and heavy and you leave it at home. They used also to do a smaller ball-head which you can find on ebay or a secondhand dealer.
mark_a_h Posted July 7, 2006 Author Share #5 Posted July 7, 2006 Great, thanks for the info. I'm going to try and find one. Does anyone know the overall folded length (legs only, sans ballhead)?
marknorton Posted July 7, 2006 Share #6 Posted July 7, 2006 Find a picture of one... "cylinder" is 6cm long * 3cm diameter, excluding the wing-nut. "legs" vary from 11-16 cm from the tip of the foot to where they join the cylinder Maximum length from the end of the longest leg to the opposite end of the cylinder is 20cm. mark_a_h Posted July 7, 2006 Author Share #7 Posted July 7, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Mark, thanks! That's a good size for me. It will fit in my Domke bag nicely. Fabulous.
wparsonsgisnet Posted July 7, 2006 Share #8 Posted July 7, 2006 Mark, I bot mine used on eBay about a year ago. At that time, they were appearing pretty regularly on eBay. It is a treat to use and even just to contemplate. What wonder designs Leica turns out! Bill
mark_a_h Posted July 7, 2006 Author Share #9 Posted July 7, 2006 *bump* If any of you know where I can lay my hands on a late model used Leica mini Tripod 14100 with Leica 14110 1/4" ballhead, in excellent condition... I'd appreciate it. Ebay is a little bare right now. I will do Paypal for cost + shipping to Toronto, Canada. Mark
grober Posted July 7, 2006 Share #10 Posted July 7, 2006 I had and regularly used both. I bought them forty years+ ago in my midwest salad days for my first M3 only to lose them last year on a flight to New Jersey where we attended a family wedding. I know for sure we didn't mis-place either and suspect some itchy fingers emptied them out of my luggage during the now-required airport inspection. I had stored the ball head in a custom-made leather bag. I replaced the Leitz product with the current Manfroto table pod. It's ball head in not close to the quality of the old Leitz head but in every other way, it's completely satifactory. There are three pieces to this stability solution: small tripod base, stalk and ball head which all fit into a nifty carrying case. (Regarding the trip last year: surely a subject for a separate post but that was our first East Coast-scale wedding reception experience. We remain in considerable culture shock to this day!) jtharvie Posted July 7, 2006 Share #11 Posted July 7, 2006 Here is a suggestion http://www.trek-tech.com/ Nice piece of kit and is helpful on long excursions to churches, museums, castles etc. That's my 2 cents. Cheers, JTH

Prior to that they were a bit free and easy with the ISO standards for thread length, as my R8 found out to my cost...
starwatcher Posted July 7, 2006 Share #13 Posted July 7, 2006 Mark, buy the Leica tripod. Spend the damned 275 euros and that's it. If you calculate a 20years usage, it's about 5 US cent a day best - Klaus
mark_a_h Posted July 7, 2006 Author Share #14 Posted July 7, 2006 Mark, buy the Leica tripod. Spend the damned 275 euros and that's it. I have just bought the legs (#14100) new, online from a shop in Montreal for $139.00 Canadian (98 Euros). I see a used ball head (#14110) in black on ebay. I may try for that if the bidding stays low.
leicapages Posted July 7, 2006 Share #15 Posted July 7, 2006 I can wholeheartedly recommend the mini-tripod and ballhead. They are top-notch quality and have saved the day for me many times. Especially for night fotography, or in darker situations. Very handy because you use it to stabilize your camera against a wall or anything else, under almost every angle. Much easier than schlepping around a tripod.

george + Posted July 8, 2006 Share #17 Posted July 8, 2006 I just do not understand the comment that the tripod will need a quarter inch bolt. My ballhead works with both. You unscrew the bottom and turn the disk - that has the quarter inch hole on one side and the 3/8 hole on the other - the other way. Here it is. Welcome, dear visitor!
