Focus issue on new M9?

I received my new M9 about one week ago and have been playing with it, learning to use it and also testing some of the features. I come from a D3 and fine Nikon lenses.

One thing that I noticed immediately is that there is a focus issue: the camera simply will not focus accurately to infinity with any of the Leica lenses that I have, and focus at other distances does not seem to be calibrated either. Taking pictures of nearby buildings, for example, I cannot resolve the individual bricks well while equivalent images from the D3 allow me to see the brick spacings quite well. Overall, the pictures that I take with the DLux-4 are very sharp and those with the M9 are not.

I also noticed today that Kevin Moloney´s just posted M9 review mentions "Starting with the M6TTL, Leica changed the way the rangefinder is calibrated. Now repairmen need a special tool... But the aftereffect is that the calibration screw cannot be tightened as well even by a good repairman. The cameras are easier to knock out of alignment. This one [Kevin´s M9] was no exception. It is a demo model that had been handled before I picked it up, and sure enough the focus calibration was slightly off. I couldn’t safely use long lenses wide open and be sure of a sharp image."

I will arrange for the camera to go back to Leica service. Does anyone ever experienced this problem?

Thanks,

Jose Salcedo

Hi,

I had the same problem. I could make razer sharp photos with my M( and my wife D-Lux4, but not with my M9. Nothing was sharp at any distance, nor at infinity. I sent it to Solms after 6 days and I got it 2 days ago and now everything is perfect, at any distance are the pictures very sharp.

I suggest you send it to Leica for calibration, it is a wonderful camera. At least for me, because now my 24 Elmarit is the real 24.

Regards
