m9 battery/charger issue

Since day 1 (about a month ago), the battery in the charger has been giving me a lot of problems. 99 tries out of a 100, when I put the battery into the plugged in charger, the 80% and Charge lights start simultaneous blinking at about 1Hz. And the battery does not warm up indicating charging. The 1 time out of a 100, I get just the green charge light starts to flash as it should, and the battery gets warm, as it should.

Battery problem ? Or charger problem ? Nearest Leica dealer is Toronto, so I'd like to figure out what is going on first.

Hi,

Are you certain that your battery actually needs a full charge when you get both lights flashing?

According to the M9 manual, the green LED should flash to indicate charging. Once an 80% charge has been reached, the yellow LED will illuminate too. When the battery is fully charged, the green LED will light continuously.

It could well be that your battery is more than 80% charged a lot of the time. If you leave it connected when both lights are lit, does the green LED eventually stop flashing?

Yes. I have read the manual, even though I'm a male ;-)

The camera shows the battery at 25%. Previous times I've charged it, I ran the battery down till the camera would not operate. When the camera was delivered, the battery was at 10%.

When the orange and green lights are flashing at the same time, it indicates a charging fault according to the manual. You are supposed to take it to a dealer. I'm just curious if the fault is in the charger or the battery and if anyone else has had this problem. CHarger and battery contacts are clean. Couldn't think of anything else to look at. Battery life is about 300 snaps right now, often using autoreview for 15-30 seconds as I learn this new camera.

BTW, the green flashing light indicating normal charging is once every 2 seconds. The pair of orange and green flashing is faster than once per second. Orange should never flash if things are good. It only comes on steady when the charge is 80% or higher.

Hi again. Sorry if I mis-read your first post. :o It does sound as though there may be a problem with the charger and/or the battery. If you had a spare battery, you could try and determine it was the charger or the battery a bit more, but I think you would probably have already done that. I'd suggest a call to Leica, or the nearest dealer, and asking if they may know? Hopefully they might have heard of this problem before, and could determine which is at fault. If it was the dealer that you bought your camera from, I'd hope that they might exchange the offending article, or at least lend you one until yours can be replaced by Leica.
