M9: BLING it on!

Happy New LEICA-Year 2010,

here are my few "bling it ons" for the time being:

- 2 batteries, they drain really quick and I hope this gets better when they

are getting older;

- Luigi strap;

- Luigi halfcase, rally brown, aged. A really wonderful product with the LUIGI-grip.

But, big but: it gives the camera the "gripsize" of an R8. For the next camera

I definetely choose the one without the grip ...

Don´t try a Luigi-halfcase for M8/ M9 and the LEICA- grip. You need S. Stallone-hands

to handle your camera.

Best

GEORG

Does a 400 Noflexar in PIGRIFF-C count?;)

I think that's an abomination of nature - kind of like having a Ferrari converted into a combine harvester. Sure you can do it but natural selection wouldn't permit it in the normal scheme of things. :p

My accessories are very decidedly 'non-bling':

• Luigi Crescenzi 'standard' half-case, Whisky, without grip;

• Modified Luigi full case (classical, non-removeable front), Aged Brown

• Modified Domke wide strap (swivels removed);

• Billingham Small Hadley, khaki;

• 58mm ExpoDisc -- invaluable in the new light universe where fluorescent bulbs are taking over.

I don't count things like cleaning kit, batteries, cards etc. I do not own large capacity cards -- do you really like to bet everything on one card?

Are there any experiences with the shutter release buttons (Concave or convex)?

Good or bad expereinces, just so that those on the edge might know!

I know Lars prefers a cable release :p

@Wattsy: Hows the Porsche working out for ya? I see you replaced the "red" seat with the 'P'HSA black one. :p

Black dot & well broken in Luigi :D

Drool... Nice case and lens :)

I've realised these Luigi cases are indeed very beautiful looking and will look even better with age and more broken in. I use the black Leica half case myself and find it does the job well (minimalist although 'seems' a little pricey like all Leicas). I thought I'd share this thought since it crossed my silly mind, those Luigi cases look so good, I'd probably buy a full case to fit over the half case just to protect it.... sorry for sounding like a basket case!

Anyways, my point being I'm glad a lot of the bling still preserves the antique-esque look of the original Leica and are mostly transparent and sets it apart from a lot of what's available today! This seems to be one major reason a lot us of went for the digital Leica in the first place and stands out as a new product... er... looking old-ish!

Happy New Year Everyone!

I tried the soft release with my M8 for a while and ended up returning back to the standard release button. For me at least it didn't help much with smoothness and amplified the gritty nature of the button vs making it feel smoother - I think because it imparted perhaps a bit more pressure obliquely on the button travel vs straight up/down. That was with a convex softie. The M9 with the soft release mode kind of covers it now anyway.

As regards the aged Luigi case - with my chrome M8 it used to get complements from folks about my 'old film camera'. I tried the Leica half case but didn't like the smooth shiny leather and clip arrangement, although I probably didn't give it long enough to see if it improved with age & use.

@gwelland: Thanks for sharing about the shutter release button, I agree with you about the soft mode, but apparently it cannot lock exposure in that mode, which is unfortunate! However, I do keep it in the soft and discreet mode a lot since it is by nicest feel, something I cannot get in any DSLR.

Is that Luigi case of yours the rally colour? It looks lovely...

Hi, glad you like it too! This case was on my M8 for about 18 months. The colour is 'aged brown'. In use it has softened and darkened considerably with frequent handling.

I ordered DAGs black dot as soon as I saw the M9 didn't have one. I didn't put on yet since I am concerned about devaluing it. Anyone else feel this way or not?

Are you intending to use the camera or just fondle it? :rolleyes:

the day you bought it it got devalued. Removing the red dot isn't a destructive process if you do it properly. I have both a red & black dot spare so I can always restore it if needed.

Set up the camera you want so that you enjoy using it vs worrying about resale.

Thanks for opinion. I'm not a fondler but light user. I have 2 little kids which restrict my free time. I pretty much have every week of their lives documented. Resale value is important to me since I have to sell in order to upgrade as funds are limmited. I actually do have a spare red dot! Thanks for the tip. Any advice how to make a clean transition? Happy New Year!

From a practical point of view I found that swapping the red dot to black dot was relatively painless, although did take a bit of effort. I haven't tried the various matchstick approaches but what has worked for me has been the following:

1) Hold your thumb on the red dot with some pressure for a couple of minutes - the heat of your thumb will heat/loosen the adhesive behind the red dot.

2) Use a lens cloth and apply some pressure using your thumb and fingernail through the cloth against the edge of the raised Leica lettering and gradually rotate the dot clockwise/anti-clockwise. It will initially only move a little, if at all. Keep the thumb pressure and keep trying. The cloth will ensure that you don't mark the dot.

3) Keep doing (2) until the dot starts to rotate 15degress, 30 degrees, 45 degrees etc until the adhesive bond breaks. At this point the dot should break free.

4) Use something like the blade of a craft knife to lift off the red dot and put the red dot somewhere safe adhesive side up.

5) You may need to clean up some of the remaining adhesive left on the camera before applying the black dot.

6) Remove the backing of the black dot and put it on the back of the red dot. That'll keep it clean and reusable.

At some point in the future if you need to replace the red dot you'll need to do (1) - (6) again. Btw, don't be surprised if after (1-3) you end up with Leica embossed on the pad of your thumb. :D

Hope that helps.

Wonderful!! Many thanks. Much better than having to ruin the red dot!!
