x1 and Digilux 2

The Digilux 2 was released in 2003, so in digital terms it's quite long in the teeth by now. It's a lot larger than the X1, with a whopping f2-2.4 28-90 equiv. zoom lens. It has a 2/3" 5MP sensor.

The X1 is very compact, much more like a the first screw mount Leicas. It has a f/2.8 36mm-equiv lens and an APS-size (23.6 x 15.8mm) 12MP sensor.

What both cameras have in common is very simple manual controls -- real dials to control shutter speeds and apertures, instead of relying on fiddly program modes and menu settings.

Interesting -- while digital technology has come on in leaps and bounds, the ergonomics and handling of the earlier film Leicas is hard to improve on (which is why the latest M cameras look a lot like the M3 of 50+ years ago). The challenge is to make the digital interface as simple and straightforward.

In terms of performance, the X1 will obviously outperform the Digilux 2, but you will have just the one focal length.

While I agree with the above excellent summary, I would not discount the D2 if physical size is not important to you. The X1 will almost certainly out-perform the D2 at and around the 35mm focal length equivalent; however the D2 is also an excellent portrait camera with a superb 90mm setting on its faster Vario-Summicron lens. The flash on the D2 is probably better too, because it can be tilted to give soft bounce lighting which can be most valuable indoors. If cost is not an issue, I would advocate continuing your search for a good Digilux 2 and add an X1, when available, for those 'take anywhere' photo situations.

I don´t think there are any 2003-sensors left, the replacements were most likely

(private guess) made in 2005- 2007. They won´t use faulty 2003 parts, this

would cost them even more money in the long run.

I had the sensor changed in my D2 a year or so ago and the camera

works like a charm again. You can´t go wrong with a s/h D2 since

- even these days - LEICA accepts a warranty-repair of the sensor.

To honour this "behaviour" I´am willing to pay (even a substantial)

bit more for LEICA- gear ...
