Frank,

My travel experience is similar to yours. I've never actually lost a bag in nearly two million miles of flown airline travel and the worst I've had have been a couple of torn or bent large roll on suitcase frames. I've never had a problem with Pelican cases or with theft.

My pet peeve is also the fact that, even in first or business class, people seem to want to carry on their entire life's belongings ... not to mention inability to pack carry on in the overhead in anything like a considerate manner for others.

flying around china, nearly every passenger seems to carry the maximum sized case allowed on board and on some airlines they will carry two

Ah yes, air travel in China, a delightful experience. I've only had to put up with the Beijing/Xian internal flights but that was bad enough.

I'd actually temper my original comment about not worrying about checked luggage - that applies to within the US, Europe and primary Asian destinations. Anything beyond that and I'd be concerned about the bags and avoid checking anything ...

Imagine this scenario : You have 1 carry-on bag, containing your M9, a 24mm 1.4 summilux, another 50mm summilux and a 90mm elmarit. Ballpark estimates of your equipment is in $15000!

Then you are told, while checking-in your flight to the US, that you can only have a transparent plastic bag with documents, and your carry on baggage must be checked-in! What do you do?

Would any insurance cover the risk of loss in this scenario? More importantly, your photo bag most likely is not suited to be checked-in!

They allow you to sling a camera. So do that. And put one lens in each pants pocket.

While you can't carry everything on your person, that should cover most of it.

...just check with your AIRLINE before travel - they enforce the rules by which, ultimately, you fly or not.

I got "caught" just the once coming back from Glasgow to LHR. I had travelled up on a weekday on a 737, hand-baggage only, but coming back on Sunday they had put on an Embraer, with no overhead storage. We the "self-loading freight" didn't know this until we were bussed out to the 'plane, and ordered at the bottom of the steps to hand over all our bags to go into the hold. A near riot ensued as people (including me) frantically transferred stuff to pockets, etc. Since then I have taken nothing for granted, and at the very least ensure that my hand-baggage, no matter how small, is at least lockable.

You argue - you don't fly. It's as simple as that.

Regards,

Bill
