I can't quite work out the physics involved but every now and then the barge basin at Hawley Lock on London's Regent's Canal empties. When this happens some of the original structure is revealed. In this case on the left a horse ramp. Until barges became motorised, I assume sometime in the early 20th century, horses were used to tow the barges. Occasionally, an accident might happen and a horse could fall into the canal. These ramps were built in at stages so that a horse could be lead out of the water back onto the towpath. It is interesting to see the archaeology of the industrial revolution exposed in this way.
