Hi dear friends,

While I was taking pictures this evening, I found a similar problem.

You could check the sample picture that has been attached.

But this is kind of different because it's only 1/3 of the whole width, though quite significant, isnt it?

I am thinking if I should send them to repair.

But it took 2 months last time when I found the problem on the back dialer.

If I send it to the dealer, I will have no extra camera to use for the next "few" months...

Jim

Jim;

Your picture is the olde "strong light at border of sensor gets bounced around and creates a green line" problem.

It is the light at the left; one degree or so left or right, and there would not have been an issue.

This one happens once in the odd while to me- maybe 3-4 times since the fall of 2007.

I have been getting a lot of those green lines lately... Does anyone know if this problem still exist with the M9? It's a big problem for me, maybe because of my shooting style, so I'm thinking about upgrading... Will it help?

  • 3 months later...

hello all, i got my first M8 just 4 days ago, and i am now quite possibly in love!, but while testing it i have discovered an almost identical problem as the original poster of this thread, i was wondering what the outcomes have been of other people with this problem, has it / can it, be repaired if i send it away? should i perhaps ask for my money back and chance it with another used body? the camera is perfect in every other way, and i love it, but id hate to lose it for months and months while it is repaired. whats do others think is the best course of action?

thanking you in advance for any help,

cheers

All M8 and M8.2 have this issue; there is no possible remedy. Fortunately it is relatively easy to avoid.

sorry for my ignorance, im still learning about all the M8's little tricks, could you tell me the method as how to avoid this horizontal line that spans the entire image? im aware of the banding issue at high iso and under exposure, and how to avoid that issue, but this seems to be a different problem altogether?

If it spans the entire image than it must be something else entirely. The well-known issue we were talking about here will only affect one half of the sensor. It typically happens when there is a bright source of light just outside the image area. It messes up the reference pixels on the side of the sensor; these pixels shouldn’t receive any light but with the sensor of the M8 and M8.2 they sometimes do. The way to avoid this is to make sure they are no lights to the side of the image – a light source within the image poses no problems, and neither does a light source well outside the image. It is only a narrow zone to the left and right of the image that’s problematic (“left” and “right” here presumes landscape orientation; it would be “top” and “bottom” for portrait orientation). The image posted by Jim is fairly typical: the greenish banding stretches from the side (with visible traces of a light source) to the middle, where it abruptly stops.

But if you see some banding spanning the entire image and if there is no light source aligned with it, it must be something else; in that case you should contact Leica’s customer support.

Wow, that's a while ago :-)

I have got the same problem with my Leica M8. As you may know, I sent mine for exactly this problem to Solms back in November. That said they repaired it, but unfortunately the problem showed up again right away. Although at a lesser degree.

The biggest problem is, that the line doesn't show up all the time. This makes it extremely difficult for Leica to make a proper diagnosis. They take two pictures, say 'oh it isn't there' and send it back. Then after 50 pictures, it showes up again.

Currently, I'm waiting for the new firmware to come - which is said to be in May. If the firmware doesn't fix the problem, my M8 is going back to Solms again. In the meanwhile, I can fortunately enjoy it at ISOs below 1250.
