Guest Essemmlee Posted December 18, 2009 Share #1 Posted December 18, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Is it possible to use this flash with the M9 that I don't have yet? I have the off camera E-TTL cable that could be very useful on an M9 if it could be used. Not concerned with maintaining E-TTL capability, just manual flash would do. Thanks. Advertisement Posted December 18, 2009 Posted December 18, 2009 Hi Guest Essemmlee, Take a look here M9 plus 580 EXII. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
logaandm Posted December 20, 2009 Share #2 Posted December 20, 2009 580 EX II does not work when directly attached to the M9. I can get the 580EXII to work with the pocket wizard on the M9 when suitably programmed.
Rolo Posted December 20, 2009 Share #3 Posted December 20, 2009 Not wanting to contradict anyone for the sake of it, but my 580 EXII works fine on my M9 in Manual Mode. Suggest you give it a try.
Bo_Lorentzen Posted December 20, 2009 Share #4 Posted December 20, 2009 Lots of flashes works in manual and auto mode, but for logical reasons not in TTL. Actually my old oly FL40 have been working wonderfully in auto mode on the M9. .
robertwright Posted December 21, 2009 Share #5 Posted December 21, 2009 the 580exII also has an Auto mode that you can engage via the custom function, you input aperture and ISO and the flash meters the exposure, old skule.

You are right, of course. Put the flash in manual mode and it works great. 430 EX works in manual mode as well.

I too am patiently awaiting my M9 and these questions have periodically crossed my mind. Thanks for any input.

Hi Terry, The SB800 & SB900 should be OK, but I don't think that the SB600 has an external sensor for auto mode. (I've used my SB900 with my M8.) Guest Essemmlee Posted December 23, 2009 Share #9 Posted December 23, 2009 Thanks for responses. I'll not need to buy a new flash.
Rolo Posted December 23, 2009 Share #10 Posted December 23, 2009 Custom setting 5-2 on the 580 EXII provides auto thyristor control. I've just purchased a Metz adapter, 3502, for my two Metz MZ40 3i flashguns and found it doesn't work in TTL mode on the M9.

You need the 3502 M5 to get full function on Digital M cameras.

It's the flash gun that is not matched to the M9, according to Metz. Not to worry, I'm perfectly happy to use a flashgun on Manual, or Auto, with the help of the M9's LCD. Shot a couple of hundred images yesterday this way.
