wparsonsgisnet Posted December 5, 2006 Share #1 Posted December 5, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Help. I have seen this term "chimping" in numerous threads, now, and thot I could see that it meant "cropping" in at least one of those threads. Are there other meanings, or, of course, is the meaning completely otherwise? Thanks.

robertwright Posted December 5, 2006 Share #2 Posted December 5, 2006 "Chimping" refers to the sound some photographers makes as they review images on the back of the lcd-- oooh oooh oooh ahh aahh get it? I used to think it was "chipping" as in chipping away at pictures you don't want to save.
sagarwal Posted December 5, 2006 Share #3 Posted December 5, 2006 Are there other meanings, or, of course, is the meaning completely otherwise? I've been under the impression that it meant viewing the photos in camera on the LCD screen. Other meanings?

abrewer Posted December 5, 2006 Share #6 Posted December 5, 2006 I have seen this term "chimping" in numerous threads.... From Wikipedia: Chimping is a term used in digital photography (especially when using a digital single-lens reflex camera or DSLR) to describe the habit of checking every photo on the on-camera display (LCD) immediately after capture. Usage varies depending on context and the person using it, but common uses include: -when a photographer’s sounds and actions of reviewing frames on-scene appear similar to the actions of an excited monkey. (Oooh! Oooh! Aaah!) -when a photographer is completely absorbed in the act of admiring a photo or proudly showing it off to others. -by experienced photographers to describe the actions of "wannabe" photographers. Having several digital photographers together will result in group chimping either during or after the event they are shooting. This is similar to actual chimpanzee grooming, which is a social activity. Thanks. Allan

MarkM6 Posted December 6, 2006 Share #12 Posted December 6, 2006 Doesn't it seem that only Canon photographers actually chimp? Absolutely not! Didn't you see Nikon shooters in the video? One of the reason why you might have come to that conclusion is that Canon is more prevalent in Sports Photography?
