dear colleagues, i was just wondering: on the WATE, there is a small resistance between the range of 0.5-0.7m and 0.7-infinity. the manual describes it:

Distance setting

Focusing range: 0.5 m to Infinity, range from 0.5 to 0.7 m separated by index

is there any special reason to seperate the ranges smaller than 0.7m from the rest? or is it just mine?

Falk, yes this was what I noticed too when I first got my WATE. But, it is correct.

What is going on is this. As the lens focus ring hits the resistance point you described, the range finder decouples with the lens to allow the lens to continue to focus closer. In other words, the lens will focus closer, but the range finder is not usable. Or, you can look at it this way, the range finder works fine to a point, and the lens allows you to focus closer by use of the depth of field scale on the lens to continue to focus the lens using the DOF scale or distance scale only.

It is simply a little help for you to know, that the minimum focus distance is set to 0.5m when you turn your focus ring all the way clockwise.

The rangefinder is coupled with the lens only up to 0.7m. You won't see a difference between setting it between 0.5 − 0.7m.

dear colleagues thanks for clearing,

your explanations sounds reasonable. i guess, when i first got my M8 and the WATE, i was so exited, that i did not listen to the leica-dealer at all. he was explaining a lot, i remember... and i just was standing there paralized, holding the whole thing in my trembling hands... than, after some time, i got a voigtlander 35mm, and just recently a used noctilux. and now, i use all the three lenses.

ahh, and i guess, i did not use the WATE in very close distances... but now, i am just happy with the camera and the set of lenses.

best from beijing,

Falk - I guess, you are working in China and bought the Leica in Beijing?

I can absolutely understand your excitement then ;-)

I did similar, just located in Shanghai.

It surely is an interesting place, to use a camera.
