Another one abandons digiLeica for m4/3

Ok, so there is a guy who abandons the M8 and there are guys who join the M8 or M9 club. So what?

I abandoned the DSLR world, but who cares?

Since I was mentioned in the thread......

We constantly change our camera systems. I started with a RF in the 1960's then went to a TLR, then SLR.. then the Canon D30, 10D, 20D and now the 5D... I wanted to try a RF again and chose Leica.. I hoped it would work for me but it did not simply because I prefer to spend my time framing/composing rather than focusing.. and I'm not a big fan of hyper-focal shooting.. it's often hit or miss depending on your lens and aperture..

Point is that the GF1 gives me what the M8 did not.. on a number of levels... and the M8 gave me a few things the GF1 will not.

All cameras are tools. Nothing more. If one tool does not work for you, you try another. I've never understood why people argue over cameras as much as they do or why some feel insulted when you abandon the camera they use.

E-bay. Many c-mount cinema lenses (Angenieux, Kern Switar, Cosmicar, Wollensak etc go between 5.8mm and 16mm and f1.2-1.8 and sell for 50-500$

This one is even 0.7, but I know, 25mm! not wide enough! And too expensive at 600$.

C to 4/3 adapter is 30-50$.

Are they as good as Leica/Zeiss/CV lenses though? By this I mean good already wide open. And yeah, like nhabedi pointed out, if I wanted to move to m4/3 it would be for the af, because if I have to focus manually I might as well use rangefinders.

The title of the thread 'Another one abandons …' is intended to provoke a reaction, as if it is happening everywhere.

JR made his choice, but I do wonder why people announce it. Surely not to infuence others to take the same route?

Although everyone just says 'they are only tools' it is amazing how many keep changing their cameras for the latest thing. And they often do it as soon as the 'latest' comes on the market without even waiting for the price to drop or to see if any problems arise. Personally I just stick to Leica (RF) and Canon DSLR.

With an aching heart I undersign the above comments and opinions. My m4/3 set up is growing and does all and more than my M8 for a fraction of the price.

My last trip to Cuba was touch and go: M8+RD1 or E-P1 + GH1. The latter prevailed and I am happy with the outcome. The 20/1.7 and 7-14 panny glass on the two respectively was all I needed.

I wish someone (Epson? Voigtlander?) made a full frame body taking M-mount glass with no issues at the wide end and an EVF like the Epson on EP2 or Panny on GH1. Focus assist, eg. audiovisual confirmation of contrast detection maximum achieved via manual, would be all I need.

M9 does nothing for me. An M10 would need to come out by 2011 and answer all my needs and outdo EP3 and GF2 by then. Fortunately my MP, CL and M6 stay to work with all the fine glass. Hopefully Fuji stays in the slide film business... (or worse ,there are still labs around).

Of course these are totally subjective and personal feelings about the state of affairs and are not meant to disparage all those happy with M8 and M9.

I have just purchased the Lumix GF1 with the 20mm kit lens. I love it so far. Since you post a link to Jim Radcliffe's evaluation of the camera. I was wondering if you knew what he means by «20 mm with +3 diopter.»

Sorry if this is a little «off Leica.» Thanks.

Hey Jim Radcliffe,

Since you're here, come on, let me in! What do you mean by «20 mm with +3 diopter»? It may well be something very obvious, but I fait to see it.

Thanks.

BTW, I enjoy your site very much. Thanks.

Hear, hear Jim! ;)

Just as you would never, ever see a carpenter with just one single 1/2" chisel to do all his work the same applies to photography or any other creative form be it painting or whatever. Horses for courses and choose the tool that suits you and let's not deceive ourselves either - no camera is perfect especially not a Leica as good as they are. They all have their strengths and weaknesses, usually the biggest weakness being the person pressing the shutter! :D
