mingmac Posted December 10, 2009 Share #1 Posted December 10, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I already checked the serial number thorough Leica 50mm Summicron Price and Information Guide But what i was confused was that some sellers mentioned about 6 bit and that made me feel that it is supposed to be the 4th version of Summicron, right? BUT the serial number is 2535308 so it is 3rd version. Am i getting it right? Does 6 bit only have in 4th version? Where else can i check the latest serial number? Thanks. You are right, it’s the 3rd version also according to Laney’s "Leica Camera And Lens Pocket Book". Due to Leica’s information 3rd AND 4th vesion can be coded. jpattison Posted December 10, 2009 Share #4 Posted December 10, 2009 mingmac, "6 bit" refers to the way lenses are indentified for the M8 or M9, using 6 marks on the rear of the lens. Older lenses as well as new ones have a code, so could be marked with 6 black or white marks at any time, either by Leica, or the owner. The code is binary, hence the use of the name bits. What I'm saying is that any M lens or adapter for LTM (screw) lenses could be coded, so don't let that fool you into thinking a lens has to be the latest type. regards, John
