dmfw Posted December 5, 2009 Share #1 Posted December 5, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have a Leica M3 and I am curious to know when it was produced. Is there a way to find this information using the serial #? It was purchased in June of 1956. Thanks

Alice MacRae Posted December 5, 2009 Share #2 Posted December 5, 2009 Yes, we can! First give us your credit card number. No, I mean give us the serial number and we can look it up.

Alice MacRae Posted December 5, 2009 Share #4 Posted December 5, 2009 The Serial # is 800995. Thanks 1/1/1955 (Exact Date Unrecorded) Leica M3 800000 - 807500 (Serial # Range) 7500 (produced).
dmfw Posted December 5, 2009 Author Share #5 Posted December 5, 2009 Thank you for the information. According to an article on Wikipedia, the M3 was produced from 1954-1966 and over 215,000 made during this period. Therefore I am a little confused about your 7,500 figure. Is my M3 one version of the overall M3 series? Also, for insurance purposes, is it more desirable to have a M3 produced early in the run, such as mine, or produce later when they were able to work out any issues with the model? Thanks
Alice MacRae Posted December 5, 2009 Share #6 Posted December 5, 2009 807500 - 800000 = 7500 is the units produced in 1955 with unrecorded exact date of production. Certainly M3 total production for 1955 were far more than this batch but their serial number ranges were outside your 800000-807500. Nothing really special about your 800995 unless it's in pristine condition. Then the value will be more. Premiums are paid by collectors for really very very early production run M3 (70xxxx) and late runs (11xxxxx). Hope this helps.

tobey bilek Posted December 5, 2009 Share #8 Posted December 5, 2009 They started in 1954 around serial 750xxx. They are in my 1966 catalog for around $300 or $400 if memory serves. I know you could get one with a lens for less than 475 list.
Robert J Posted December 5, 2009 Share #9 Posted December 5, 2009 The 7500 figure is just the size of the particular batch which includes your camera.
