Clandrel Posted December 7, 2009 Author Share #42  Posted December 7, 2009 What do you mean by lightness? surfermark Posted December 8, 2009 Share #43 Â Posted December 8, 2009 Enjoy the wait and even more so the X1 when it arrives. Am on top of a waiting list as well.My pocketable high IQ solutions so far, are Sigma's DP1 and DP2 (excellent lens plus sensor performance). I expect the X1 to better the DP2 in many respects. Don't pay attention to some notorious naysayers on this forum. The majority of them never owned nor will own and use a Leica. It is perfectly fine to be critical and challenging with Leica and its products, which are not perfect. But eventually, they build the best RF cameras, the best digital RF cameras, the best M-mount lenses, and the best large sensor-fixed focal length-truly pocketable digital camera (X1) money can buy! Â Â I would not pay any attention to the negativity either. I am sure the X1 will be a great Leica camera. I almost purchased a X1 myself. I decided to go with a M8.2 instead. In the end I had much debate with myself on the decision. I love my M8.2, but I am also really curious to see what the X1 will do as well. I am also curious about the M9. So I would just enjoy your purchase and start taking great pictures. If you find in the end the X1 is not suitable for your needs you can always sell it and go to a M8, M8.2 or M9 depending on your price. I went with a used mint M8.2 with new Summicron lens. So just try it and have fun. Do not pay attention to any negativity. I am sure when you get your new boxed camera it will seem like mana from heaven. Autofocus may not lock onto a glass case, or could be distracted if trying to focus on an object within the case. But it should be possible, with care. Clearly you tried to focus manually but failed to tell us your verdict on your trial.  I am also a little lost on your mixing 'film processing' with X1 evaluation!  Can you qualify your comments/
barnvelder Posted December 15, 2009 Share #45 Â Posted December 15, 2009 Pre-ordered my X1 from dealer in UK some time ago. For a while was nearly put off it by the moans and gripes on forums like this. Then read ( and re-read ) Sean Reid's review and again am now really looking forward to getting the X1 ( before Xmas...???!!!) . Already have Dlux 4 which in my opinion is the best compact camera so far as far as image quality and usability is concerned. I anticipate that the X1 will produce even better results and I can certainly ;live with some of its apparent foibles. Most negative comments seem to be hoping that the X1 would be the 'perfect' camera for all situations...and slating it if it wasn't. I doubt there will ever be a camera that suits everyone...and even then there will always be people willing to moan about it. I've now learnt to read these forums with a strong pinch of salt. I'm sure the X1 will be a great camera for me...and hopefully for everyone else that owns it! Then we can flood the forums with positive vibes...!!!! markpsf Posted December 15, 2009 Share #47 Â Posted December 15, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have posted this elsewhere but I'm still trying to get a response. And, please be clear that I want this camera to be one I want. But for me the jury is still out re whether it will work for me. Â Â There have been a number of concerns shared by Sean Reid in his overall very positive review which I'll restate here. These relate to the manual focus operation: Â 1.The manual focus scale (on the LCD) is numbered up to 2 meters but has only a few markings between 2 meters and infinity, not precise enough for a medium sensor camera. He notes that additional markings between 2 meters and infinity could be included via a firmware change. Â 2.When set to manual focus and manual exposure the camera automatically varies its aperture as you walk around with it depending on the lighting conditions even with the LCD turned off. He notes that the firmware could be modified so that the camera always sets itself to f2.8 when manual focus is being adjusted. Â 3. The camera does not remember the manual focus distance it's set to when it goes to sleep or is powered off. So then you have to reset it, which really screws you up if you're trying to use zone focusing (which many would want to use with this camera - my comment) for quick street shooting. Â It would also be great to know what is the longest you can set the camera to not go to sleep, ie., what menu choices are there to control the sleep function. Can the sleep function be turned off totally? For some of us who prefer using manual focusing, including zone focusing, this is one major concern re the X1. Â Reid thinks these can all be addressed via firmware changes. The question is whether Leica has made or will make those changes. Â Those frankly are my only concerns regarding the camera, which otherwise seems like a perfect fit for me. But they aren't small concerns given my preference for using zone focusing. Can the sleep function be turned off totally?  Mark  I asked Sean after his review was published. His response (based on firmware he had then, version 1.0):  Max time between shutdown/sleep is 10 minutes  There is no off setting to keep the camera alive indefinitely; the sleep mode cannot be turned off completely  Furrukh
markpsf Posted December 16, 2009 Share #49  Posted December 16, 2009 That at least diminishes the concern for me a bit. When shooting I infrequently go more than 10 minutes without either shooting or at least in some way keeping the camera. active.  Mark  I asked Sean after his review was published.
