I'm afraid this is not an alternative in most cases. And on the other hand, the self timer is the only way with this model. Unless LEICA still decides to drill a threaded hole into the shutter release button to accomodate the ancient cables. The battery does not weight much and does not last long (according to dpreview.com). As an M 8/9 user, one has to carry an extra charger and an extra set of batteries for the X1.
