Shutter actuation number of the first shot?

Dear all,

I just picked up my M9 black on friday. The camera is great!

When I checked the shutter actuation (image unique ID number by opening the image with preview in mac), it shows to be 66 after converting from hexa number.

I guess it should be due to some test actuation in the factory, rather than the camera has been tried by others.

Can you share what's the first shutter actuation number in your M9s?

Thanks a lot!

Henry

Just looked at an old post regarding the shutter count:

http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m8-forum/35415-determining-shutter-actuations-m8-2.html

Seems that in the era of M8, most new cameras will have shutter count below 100 out of the box, due to the testing in factory.

I guess the same should be applied to M9.

But the practice seems to be different in Japanese camera, as both of my nikon D3 and D700 has shutter count of 1 on their first shots.

the more they test it in the factory, the better. I'd say.

Piero, I agree with that.

My M9's RF focus is spot on. Since I am now on a business trip in Japan (hence have the chance of buying it in Ginza Leica shop), I am thinking of how to bring it home safely and avoid any bumping that may knock out the RF alignment....

when traveling, I carry my M8 or M9 in the Artisan & Artist Eugene Smith bag. I take the lens off and lay the camera on one insert which is place horizontally so to keep the body suspended. I still have room for 4 lenses, one next to the camera body, and three on the front pocket. Under the insert which holds the camera suspended, there is room for the battery charger.

They may reset it after testing?

Yes, David. I think the Japanese cameras should have the shutter count reset after setting.

Somehow leica digital M body does not.

But what worry me is not how many test shots have been made in factory, but rather is whether the M9 has been tried and returned by another client before I take it.

But I guess Leica Ginza shop has a good reputation and that situation should not happen.

I doubt it.

The difference is that Leica M's are all hand assembled and hand tested. Nikon and Canon's have no or very limited handwork involved. They would simply test sample sets.

Thanks for the input!

Can other fellow members confirm the shutter actuation of the first shot in their M9 out of the box? Thank you so much !

Mine is 66 and Roey's is 86.

Besides, I have just read the manual and it seems that the file name/ number (e.g. L100 0001) can be reset in the menu...

My first file name created was L1000001.dng

The unique ID number was 50. Must be a lot of testing in the Leica factory.

That would be 80 actual shutter actuations (in decimal). Mine was 105.

Thank you, Spersky, Maarten and Jeff.

At least five M9s have their first shutter actuation number between 66 to 111 (in decimal) out of the box.

It is very likely that Leica does not reset the shutter number after the factory testing.

I guess as long as the number is around that order, there is no need to worry.

Unless the number is exceptionally high, then the owner may worry that someone else may have tried the camera outside the factory.

But after all, getting a reliable dealer is most important....

I just ran my unique number off the exif data and converted the number to decimal. I did this to all of my images and found the number to be 145. In other words, the first picture titled L1000001 then equals 145 + 1 for a unique converted number of 146. This 145 number stays universal for all of my images.

Thanks, Wonka.

So, does it mean that the unique image number of your first file in M9 is 146 after converted from hexa to decimal?

Yes indeed. I don't know if this is good or bad! I can say that so far I have not encountered any problems with my M9. Of course, I'm probably not as qualified or skilled as some other members of this forum to detect all possible problems, but I haven't noticed any obvious issues.

Also, for whatever it's worth, my M9 arrived from B&H with the firmware already upgraded to 1.002. B&H did tell me that I was the first steel grey pre order that they had.

It is great to know that you are happy with your M9.

After all, it is all that hobby is about -- to make us happy :)

My M9 arrives on 20 Nov is also uploaded with the 1.002 firmware already and it is also so far so good! :D
