Paolo.Battista Posted November 19, 2009 Share #1 Posted November 19, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have the opportunity to buy this lens used (I'm referring to the R lens). I would use it for my occasional macro work with an Olympus digital body (my wlakaround camera). Does anyone give me a suggestion if it's a viable alternative to the 100 2.8 macro R, considering that I'm shooting macro only occasionaly? Thanks in advance for your answers. Best regards. Advertisement Posted November 19, 2009 Posted November 19, 2009 Hi Paolo.Battista, Take a look here Lens question: macro Elmar 100 F:4. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
tobey bilek Posted November 19, 2009 Share #2 Posted November 19, 2009 It is a very good macro lens. It requires F 8 to be sharp at landscape distance. The 100 APO is easily twice as good. If you like to work from a bellows, there is a bellows version with no focus mount. There is a version with focus mount and a detachable extension tube that gets the lens to 1:1. If you want it strictly for macro, you will be happy.

It seems to me compact enough to be easy to carry with me. I'm already using a Nikkor 28/2.8 Ai or a Summicron 35 f.2 as "normal" lens, Summicron 50 f:2 for some tele landscape work (keep in mind that the Oly has a 2x factor), obviously in addition to my Oly standard zoom. The Macro Elmarit-R version is wonderful but it's only a 60 mm, not too practical for external uses, at least for my taste. The APO 100 is heavier and diffucult to find used. For serious tele work I use mainly lenses starting from 200 mm (actually the Telyt-R 250 f:4 as carry-everywhere tele and APO Telyt-R 280 f:2.8 for going "serious"). Best regards.
