Nikon Super Coolscan 5000 ED + Mac Snow Leopard?

...I am finally about to pick up a Nikon Super Coolscan 5000 ED film scanner but have come across some less-than-positive reviews regarding its use with Mac Snow Leopard. The problem appears to be the proprietary software supplied by Nikon.

Anyone got first hand experience with this combo and, in particular, what issues did you have to deal with? Any recommended software upgrades/alternatives?

I've used the Coolscan V (same software) for years. There was an initial problem with upgrading to Snow Leopard but, thanks to comments on the web, it was easily fixed (The solution was to reinstall the previous OSX version, upgrade all Nikon software, and then reinstall Snow Leopard.). When you first launch the scanning program, and other Nikon software, you may be asked to allow installation of Rosetta--which also works fine. It's true that Nikon does not often update Nikon Scan, but there really isn't much that needs updating. If it works, it works.

In my experience it's a crap shoot. My Coolscan V works fine with the Nikon software on my MBA under Snow Leopard, but not on my early MacPro under Snow Leopard and I've done every thing recommended I can find...short of reverting to Leopard. The software will open fine, but will never see the scanner. What's worse my Coolscan 9000 firewire is a total brick on the MacPro with both Silverfast and Nikon Scan under SL, though it works with Vuescan:rolleyes:, but I HATE/cannot figure out Vuescans workflow and I will not use/waste any more hours on it. So my 9000 is a $2000 brick.:mad::mad:

You could run the previous version of Leopard on one machine and use that one for the scanner connection. You can even run the scanner from the SL computer by opening the first computer's desktop on the SL machine. You can then create a shared/drop file to transfer the scanned photo files to the SL machine. For some reason, Nikon Scan does sometimes run on one Mac, such as a MacBook Pro, even though it crashes on another Mac running the same version of OSX. Go figure!

Snow Leopard works fine with current versions of Nikon Scan. Ignore what you've read elsewhere - I assure you it's incorrect or out of date. I have a SL/NS combination that works day in, day out. I've scanned several hundred frames on my 9000 in the past week, and have been running NS on my iMac for over a year without even the slightest hitch.

FWIW, I also use VueScan and have been trying to find out which software is better. They're both good - can't tell the different in final quality to be honest.VueScan is a little bit quicker but has more bugs. NS is a bit slower but easier and less frustrating. Both make excellent scans.

My old Nikon CS 5000 worked fine on SL and now my new CS 9000 works fine with SL. The thing that does seem to screw things up with Nikonscan and CS9000 is having another firewire item (drive in my case) connected. Then no software apart from Vuescan can see the scanner. Take the FW disc out and Nikonscan and Silverfast both work fine.

I am using the said combination.

Nikon state that there is incompatibility but this can mean anything.

I have not experience any problems,... that is serious problems. Sometimes the system aborts. Sometimes following the scan the system fails to transfer file to hard disc and it simply hangs. You simply have to start again.

Above said and considering I am almost illiterate regarding software interaction of systems I am quite content with my system.

It is your decision pal ! ...and good luck.

That sounds like my issue exactly. I can't remember what's connected via firewire in the back...probably FireWave...I'll try that when I get back home.
