Got mine very recently and would like some inspiration on how to maximise the potential of this lens. Hope this is not too much of a bother. Thanks in advance !

Check out the M-mount group on Flickr for samples of Noctilux images. I have a few Noctilux images on my flickr stream, and I do have some more to add; even some that show a little of the versality of the lens, i.e., as a landscape or architectural lens. Amazing lens in my book well beyond its beautiful shallow DoF rendering.

I've only got a few up so far, but

Group f/2 : Photo Keywords : noctilux- powered by SmugMug

More are on Kodachrome, but they're somewhere between here and Kansas right now :). I picked up a 6-stop ND filter for it as well which lets me shoot wide open in broad daylight. The jury is still out on this one.

Haha, I know because I lived in Beijing for a few years in the past.

Anyway, I just tested my Noctilux on my MP in the morning. Will post pictures later. Cheers.

"Maximize the potential of the lens"? That's wrong and backwards thinking. Where do people pick up such ideas?

You have to maximize the potential of a scene. For that, you need creativity and experience.

The lens, you asked? Easy, just shoot it as if it was a 50mm lens. How else?

Congratulations on getting your Noctilux - you are in for a treat!

I see from your photo that you have an older f/1 Noctilux. From what I have seen, the older version produces a nicer bokeh than does the new f/0.95 ASPH lens (JMHO, though).

Take a look at LFI issue 2/2008 - there's a good article on the 50/1.0 Noctilux beginning on p.26. Pages 27 & 29 have some particularly good examples of what the Noctilux can do at f/1.

A couple of suggestions: Try a few rolls of Velvia and shoot some neon city lights or Christmas lights at f/1 at night - you will get some intersting results. Flower gardens at f/1 can be interesting, too.

Your new Nocti.

I'm the last person to hold up my photographs as examples of how well the Noctilux performs, but I recently had these images processed- (I used my M6 and Nocti with colour neg for these) - and I was reasonably pleased with the scanned results.

I shot the pic of my son Tom with my f/1 Nocti and a 6 stop ND filter. As the evening sun was still quite bright, it allowed me to shoot wide open to get the shallow dof. The way the Nocti renders is demonstrated well with this background detail. I've had the lens for about ten years and really love it.

My war veteran friend photograph was shot at F1 without the filter, as was the evening garden shed picture.

On the subject of film, I have found a really good processing lab in Salisbury, Wiltshire, of all places. The young guy there served his time with a pro photographer friend of mine, so he knows his business and takes care with getting the best from film. He's a rare find these days and I'm happy to pass on his details, should anyone be interested.

I hope this helps and... enjoy your lens.:)

Thank you for sharing your pictures. These are beautiful pictures. I find the bokeh of the first shot quite interesting.

Anyway, I got down to testing my lens with my MP recently on film. Think I got to learn how to handle the exposure better for early morning shots. Regards.
