Its a key.

So right now the version is 2.5 I already had it installed so no big deal... love using Light room for screening and editing.

And for raw conversion? Is the raw converter in lightroom the same as photoshop CS4?

The Raw conversion engine of Adobe Camera Raw (in the latest Ps) and Lr versions is the same, yes. Lr has considerable advantages in digital asset management and workflow while Ps allows for more complex manipulations (not always needed by any means).

However the Lr3 beta currently available contains the first Adobe profile for the M9 and improvements in sharpening and noise reduction too (amongst other things). Marvellous used with the M9.

A number of M9 owners (including me) already have Lr2.5 and are waiting for the retail release of Lr3. It isn't clear at the moment whether the version of Lr that you can obtain from the provided key will be upgradeable (at no charge) to new versions.

The M9 instruction book suggests that the latest will always be available. However normal Adobe policy is that point upgrades are free (e.g. from 2.4 to 2.5) but new versions (e.g. going from 2.5 to 3.0) are paid upgrades.

So-o a lot of people are waiting before they get their key from Leica and download .

Geoff,

I did not realize that the 3.0 beta have a M9 profile in it.. wonder if I can dump that into 2.5.?

Had hoped to make a copy of my catalog and import it into 3b but it said that it do not yet support upgrading the catalog. Looking forward to the release candidate.

Will we have to pay for subsequent upgrades to lightroom?

Just to clarify, there was no charge to upgrade from various LR 2 versions, for instance from LR 2.4 to 2.5. But, since LR 3 seems another kettle of fish, and since it's in Beta phase, I suspect there might be a charge for all, including current LR subscribers. I could of course be wrong, but if I'm not, and if LR 3 achieves the C1 conversion quality (according to various members here), I'll gladly pay for the upgrade (even though I'm still using M8.2). Of course, free would be better.

Simply by installing the beta the profile will be installed into Camera Raw and will be available - even to LR2, under the name "Adobe Standard".

Does the key come WITH the M9 or can you get it later. In other words, I already have lightroom 2.X. So if I was to get an M9 now, could I wait to obtain the key when LR 3.0 comes out?

you need the camera serial number plus an individual "TAN" number that comes with the camera. You register your camera with Leica in the owners login area and then can download the current version of this software for free. You can also get six months free with LFI magazine. Some of us already paid for LR AND LFI magazine :o

The question is whether to wait until LR3 is officially released. For people who already own LR2.5, its a no-brainer! I think that the day LR3 goes retail there might be a flood of downloads from M9 owners.

If it follows normal Adobe policy a change from a LR2.x to LR3 will require an upgrade fee.
