Formatting SD Card in M9 - I'm Confused...

I am awaiting the arrival of my M9, but I have been reading the online manual, etc. in an attempt to be ready to go when it lands.

Here is my issue:

In the past whenever I have used a Canon or Nikon DSLR, I would simply take pictures, transfer those pictures to my computer, reinsert the compact flash card back in the camera, format the card to erase the card and the camera would pick up where it left off, i.e. start numbering my images accordingly as if the card were never removed. However, with the M9 I don't think that's how it will work based on what I have read. My understanding of how the M9 works is that when you reinsert the card back into the camera after downloading your images and you reformat the card in camera, then the M9 will start anew (e.g. starts at picture number one all over again like it's brand new). Is that correct? If it is, it seems that I have read that the preferred method to avoid this issue is to not reformat the card when placed back in the M9, but to delete all images from the card and then the camera picks up where it left off and starts numbering images in numerical order. If so, why does Leica do it this way? It seems kind of cumbersome to me.

This would also mean that everytime you insert a new SD card into the M9 it will start numbering with image file names that were used before, forcing you to always rename your images when downloading to a computer.

As always, thanks in advance.

The only complications come when you want to number your images differently. For example, if you have owned an M8, an M8.2 and now an M9, you will have images that all have the name L1000xxx, so you might want to set the camera to use a different naming/numbering system, such as L2000xxx. The M9's firmware allows you to manage the folders on the SD card, rather than using the M8/8.2 firmware option of continuous numbering etc.

If you have no prior L1000xxx images to confuse you and your computer, ignore all this and simply format the cards in your camera.
