Switching SDHC cards between cameras

Dumb question, but not my first. I think I read somewhere that it's best to dedicate cards to one camera. But, I find myself using my M8.2 almost exclusively compared to my Dlux4...to the extent that I might sell the latter. Is there any concern or logistical issue with taking the cards used up until now with the Dlux and reformatting them for use in the M8.2? I use the Sandisk Extreme III 4gb cards.

Dear Jeff,

The recommendation for dedicated cards is referring to non-reformatted cards, background is that some cameras are extremely picky about card formatting and contents (with the new M9 and firmware 1.002 being one of them).

Michael

So, does that mean I can take a card that's been formatted in the Dlux 4, put it in the M8.2 and reformat it there...without any concern? (...)

Dear Jeff,

I can't imagine any logical or technical reason speaking against that...

Best regards,

Michael

The consensus is that reformatting a card does not result in any problems at all. There is some doubt about using the same card with several types of camera without reformatting them.

Actually, I fail to see the problem on a practical level. A typical card costs something like one percent of the price of a camera, and most people carry more than one card for every camera they use.

Ordinarily, this is true. I have several cards dedicated to my M8.2, and likewise for my Dlux4. But, I might sell the Dlux and want to know if I can safely start using all the cards in the M, provided I reformat them in the camera first. So far, I think the answer is yes.

My experience is that moving cards between Epson Rd-1, Lumix LC1 (D2), C Lux2, M8, M9, etc is OK providing you format the card in the camera that you use it in. Done it for years. I always format the card after downloading in the camera that next uses the card. Never a glitch.

Thanks, Earl. I've followed same practice...after using card reader to catalogue, put back in camera and reformat before use. This will be the first time, however, that I put card in different camera to reformat. That's my plan.

I don't know about the M8, but I used the same card alternating in a D-Lux 3 and a D3, without even reformatting. Each camera used its own subdirectory with its own numerical suffix.

I didn't do a search, but I do recall some earlier discussions on the forum about the practice of reformatting, or not, each time. My conclusion at the time, based on mixed response, was to remain cautious and always reformat. No big deal...takes seconds on my M8.2.
