6-bit coding turnaround

If it's like Leica UK, many of the lenses can be coded by Leica US. There are exceptions with some lenses having to go back to Solms. These include the Noctilux and the Tri-Elmar.

Leica UK now have stock and offer a 'while you wait' service if you don't mind paying £145!

I had mine done while I waited just after I bought my M8 in early 2007. When I dropped them off - I used to drive down the M1 every week - I explained that I needed to have them back ASAP and the technician changed the mounts of those that didn't need to go back to Solms while I waited. Prices have increased in the meantime though.

thanks, All. It appears the turnaround in the UK is very fast compared to the US. I sent an email over to DAG to get a quote. 4 weeks is a little long to be without lenses (I only have 2), so I'll send them in alternating time.

Is it true the 'lux is more challenging to disassemble for coding?

Is that the price per lens or a premium extra?

As it happens I'm in the UK for a couple of weeks as of next week (back to Blighty to visit the family/friends) and have 3 lenses I've been considering getting coded. MK is actually pretty convenient for me, especially if there's a 'while you wait' service.

I only need a 35 'cron, 50 'cron and 90 Elmarit-M coding which should all be pretty straight forward. I assume that you had to call in advance to schedule for this? <Hmm, just tried calling them - seems that they close at 4pm on a Friday! Grrr....>

I asked Leica USA a few days ago and their reply says

"The cost per lens is $175.00 and the current turn-around time is about 6-8 weeks. The lenses can be sent to our Service Department at the address below."

So I've decided to go without coding (or hand coding).

"450mm Summilux" - wow, where can I get one of those (and is it R-mount or Visoflex)? ;)

More seriously - will DAG or Sherri code lenses that Leica will not (i.e. pre-ASPH 35 f/1.4)? I realize I'd have to choose a substitute code (35 f/1.4 ASPH or 35 f/2 or some such) since there is no code designated for this older lens - and the mount has to machined in-situ, since it is not the easily-unscrewed type used on current M lenses.

It's just a matter of time & money. I'm sure Leica could deliver it if you could afford it. Alternatively a nice Bentley Continental Convertible might be quicker to get and cheaper. :D

Since I have the email addresses handy, try:

dagcam at chorus.net

krauter at warwick.net

I'm sure they'll confirm/deny. Both were actually very responsive to my emails last week.

As others suggest, DAG or Sherri K. can do. But, I sent mine to Leica NJ last Spring and got turnaround in under 3 weeks. It helps to call in advance and establish a relationship with a rep who can expedite. However, I'm sure time frames change depending on current workloads.
