russell Posted November 10, 2009 Share #1 Posted November 10, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Is it possible for a skilled repairman to take an old M3 35mm Summilux and remove the goggles, recalibrate the focus cam, have it bring up the correct framelines, *and* still retain the 0.65 meter close focus? If so then why am I(or any of us) still wasting my time with my 1980s version that only focuses to 0.90 meters? It'd be great to be able to get in closer. (and no, I don't want the asph version) Also, as a side question, is the 1990s titanium version in brass? And if so how heavy? And what could it bring me over my 1980s version? Is it more flare resistant? My version is still a great lens. Only it flares indoors with lights overhead.

Yes many things are possible, but it will cost a lot for gaining 25 cm
russell Posted November 11, 2009 Author Share #3 Posted November 11, 2009 Doesn't have to cost too much. And in the Leica world we're used to paying a bomb for extra incremental performance increase near the limits. I was going to ask Malcolm Taylor his opinion but I wanted to float the idea here first

giordano Posted November 11, 2009 Share #5 Posted November 11, 2009 Is it possible for a skilled repairman to take an old M3 35mm Summilux and remove the goggles, recalibrate the focus cam, have it bring up the correct framelines, *and* still retain the 0.65 meter close focus? Maybe, though I think it'll take an all-new cam, not just "recalibration", because the relationship between lens movement and rangefinder movement has to change. In any case, without the goggles you won't get rangefinder focusing closer than the limit of the rangefinder in the body (i.e. 0.7m or above).
