coup de foudre Posted November 21, 2009 Share #241 Posted November 21, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) While I realize that you have a preproduction camera, can you give us impression of AF speed, preview speed (how fast a preview image is available), how quickly the preview can be zoomed, the quality of the EVF, especially in low light (does it get noisy or stay clean enough for MF) and of course IQ. AF speed is acceptable, but not necessarily what i'd care to use for decisive moment street shots. they are still working on it and i do not have the final release so it's not really fair to judge... what impressed me, however, was it's ability to focus quite quickly in really low light (conditions, to be honest, i doubt i could do myself). the preview image is almost instantaneous and i much prefer seeing that i got the shot rather than the blackout of a DSLR. how quickly the preview can be zoomed? LOL! i honestly don't know. it is not something i have ever done on a camera so i definitely never checked this out. sitting at a cafe, however, shooting passer-bys and chimping (something i rarely do), the image seemed instantly available. i have never used an EVF before (looked at it back on the GX100 once in a store and thought it was ghastly) so i cannot compare it to other units. however, i found it to be quite good in low light and was able to focus by enlarging the image. i will try more tomorrow with this as i was honestly using spot focus most of the night i had it before. IQ is something i will discuss later. right now there is no way to process images correctly in RAW (Ricoh is aware and working on this) and i feel it unfair to conclude too much... the bokeh (which the japanese took a lot of effort with) is amazing, perfect round specular highlights, and the OOF areas have a very gentle curve reminiscent of film. the lens is fast enough to get separation (the macros, especially, are unreal) when focus is spot on. Advertisement Posted November 21, 2009 Posted November 21, 2009 Hi coup de foudre, Take a look here The ricoh rival. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
barjohn Posted November 21, 2009 Share #242 Posted November 21, 2009 I have loaded the DNGs that were available on one site in LR 3 Beta and they look quite good for color. They appear to be about 1 stop under exposed compared to the JPG. The color appears to be the same as the JPG.
coup de foudre Posted November 21, 2009 Share #243 Posted November 21, 2009 I have loaded the DNGs that were available on one site in LR 3 Beta and they look quite good for color. The color appears to be the same as the JPG. that was a previous version... the newest update is not readable to my knowledge. the colour, btw, is gorgeous (and most know i am not a colour person). as for the underexposure, i will have to look closer at what i shot on the previous software. as i said, there does not seem to be a good profile yet. it's very frustrating! (loving the camera the more i use it, though, and i'm really trying not to succumb... the shutter is just music to my ears -- dead silent.)
barjohn Posted November 21, 2009 Share #244 Posted November 21, 2009 If you shoot a 24 color chart, Adobe has a profiling tool that will make a profile for the camera under the lighting conditions shot. LR 3 Beta and the new 5.6 converter may be able to deal with the new DNGs.
