The thumbs-up is ergonomically perfect and offers precise replication of the thumb-bracing position that was second nature with the M4-P and M6. Same goes for cases, etc. You guys are obviously better men than I am. I used the advance lever for 30+ years as a "handle." I found my grip on the M8 very insecure without something to brace my thumb on. Based on reactions from other M8 and M9 users who've tried it, I don't think I'm alone... Makes it easier to carry the camera too. But all of this is a metter of personal preference, as we have seen. Somepople like the camera naked, some with hand grip and some with thumbs up. Coming for Film M's, as Lars will attest, putting your thumb "under" the wind lever is very comfortable and comforting. It also (for me) makes a very fatigue free 'handle' for carrying the camera on your thumb, in combo with a wrist strap. I submit that it is this factor that everyone is missing on the M9. Hence the Thums Up device to supplement that factor. Ergonomically it is used differently, but serves the same function (not the winding ). Clearly it is not for everyone, but many prefer it. Currently, I have opted to stick a piece of velcro just where the thumb presses on the camera in use. I find this provides a good non slip grip on the camera and cannot catch on anything. Both my M8's are fitted this way. My M9 is 'upgraded' by having a small pad under part of the velco to place a bump and improve thumb ergonomics.
