ptarmigan Posted November 6, 2009 Share #1 Posted November 6, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi I'm looking for an inexpensive wireless trigger that will work with an M8 to trigger studio flash. Needs to be relatively inexpensive as I won't use it often enough to justify a big outlay. Thanks in advance.

Bartek Wrzesniowski Posted November 6, 2009 Share #2 Posted November 6, 2009 The only reliable transmitters are pocket wizards. All the cheap transmitters simply don’t work, or work only from time to time – buying them is a waste of money. ---------------------------------------------------------- website: editorial corporate portrait photographer POLAND| BARTEK WRZESNIOWSKI" / blog
pkhsu Posted November 6, 2009 Share #3 Posted November 6, 2009 I agree that pocket wizzard works very well.
ptarmigan Posted November 6, 2009 Author Share #4 Posted November 6, 2009 I know that and have used one many times. However these days I shoot very little in the studio and therefore just need a basic flash trigger under £50 for occasional use.
kully Posted November 6, 2009 Share #5 Posted November 6, 2009 Not this one exactly - Kenro release Radio Slave Flash Trigger But I have a Kenro/Hama thing which was cheap and just works. This was simple product/portrait shots in a small studio mind.
Rolo Posted November 6, 2009 Share #6 Posted November 6, 2009 Appreciate the need for economy, but once I got beyond a flash cable and magic eyes, reliability became a big issue and Pocket Wizards are designed and built for a long life. As soon as somebody else is involved in your image making, be it a member of the family, scout group, or a paying customer you will not want to let them down. I'm sure many products work well, but for a once off investment Pocket Wizards provide great peace of mind and performance. This shot: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/sports-leisure-time/104258-land-rover.html was a result of my little M8 +PW firing three soft boxes over a distance of 30 yards. Not a second thought on reliability.

This was simple product/portrait shots in a small studio mind. That's the sort of thing I was thinking of, its for a smallish indoor studio. Thanks. Have to say though I have used these cheaper ones without issue before though I've never owned one myself. Will they all power off the M8 or do I need to look at an option with it's own battery power?
trs Posted November 6, 2009 Share #9 Posted November 6, 2009 If you don't need to move a lot, good old wired connection via hotshoe add-on works fine as well.
giordano Posted November 6, 2009 Share #10 Posted November 6, 2009 I bought two sets of the very cheap Chinese 4-channel wireless flash triggers from Ebay a year or two ago. They don't get much use but have been entirely reliable so far. I tried one at about 20m range and it worked fine, but I haven't used them more than about 6m away for real. Hi Ian, I'm not sure how good these are, but I saw them demonstrated at an exhibition last weekend, and they seemed to work OK and were selling well. This was the Falcon Eyes RF-425 set. It was selling for just under €50.
grober Posted November 7, 2009 Share #12 Posted November 7, 2009 Yes, Pocket Wizard is good but the bloody thing is so very large. I have used the Morris trigger with good results. -g
adan Posted November 7, 2009 Share #13 Posted November 7, 2009 Why wireless? I just got a standard hot-shoe-to-pc converter. Slides into the hot shoe, has a plug on the back. I duct-taped the PC cable to to the adapter and it just stays in the studio. 10-ft (3m) cord lets me move anywhere. Roughly like these, although a bit different cosmetically: Hama | Hot Shoe Adapter 1 | HA-6951 | B&H Photo Video Amazon.com: Adorama Hot Shoe to PC Adapter, Single Outlet without Connecting Cord.: Camera & Photo
spwongra Posted November 7, 2009 Share #14 Posted November 7, 2009 Paul Buff products have a great reputation and customer service. White Lightning: Professional Photographic Flash Units and Accessories For $130 you can get a battery operated trigger and a battery operated receiver. I own some of their strobes and a trigger and receiver. EDIT: Realized you are in the UK and Paul Buff has a new policy and is not shipping outside the US, Canada, Australia. In any case they are a great alternative to PW's.
brill64 Posted November 7, 2009 Share #15 Posted November 7, 2009 do your studio flash have a built-in slave?use that if the distance is not too great and you could trigger it with an on camera flash. it works if the interior of your studio is not flooded with sunlight
ndjambrose Posted November 14, 2009 Share #16 Posted November 14, 2009 I bought some cheap chinese radio slaves for a personal project a few years ago. They stopped working after ten minutes. Total crap, frankly. Pocket wizards are great. I use them for the same reason as everyone else. But I can also recommend Elinchrom Pulsars - great build quality, very similar specification to PW's - multi-frequency, multi-channel, same synch speed, trigger both remote flash and remote cameras. But they're also significantly cheaper.
