Triggering studio flash using an M8

Appreciate the need for economy, but once I got beyond a flash cable and magic eyes, reliability became a big issue and Pocket Wizards are designed and built for a long life.

As soon as somebody else is involved in your image making, be it a member of the family, scout group, or a paying customer you will not want to let them down. I'm sure many products work well, but for a once off investment Pocket Wizards provide great peace of mind and performance.

was a result of my little M8 +PW firing three soft boxes over a distance of 30 yards. Not a second thought on reliability. :)

Hi

I'm looking for an inexpensive wireless trigger that will work with an M8 to trigger studio flash. Needs to be relatively inexpensive as I won't use it often enough to justify a big outlay.

Thanks in advance. :)

Ian, rent the thing. Get the one that works. Take it back.

Not this one exactly - Kenro release Radio Slave Flash Trigger

But I have a Kenro/Hama thing which was cheap and just works.

This was simple product/portrait shots in a small studio mind.

That's the sort of thing I was thinking of, its for a smallish indoor studio. Thanks.

Stunning shot but not what I need to do and it's for 'my own enjoyment' not a paid job or one where I need to satisfy a client. Only myself to let down. Have to say though I have used these cheaper ones without issue before though I've never owned one myself.

Will they all power off the M8 or do I need to look at an option with it's own battery power?

I bought two sets of the very cheap Chinese 4-channel wireless flash triggers from Ebay a year or two ago. They don't get much use but have been entirely reliable so far. I tried one at about 20m range and it worked fine, but I haven't used them more than about 6m away for real.

I know that and have used one many times. However these days I shoot very little in the studio and therefore just need a basic flash trigger under £50 for occasional use.

Hi Ian,

I'm not sure how good these are, but I saw them demonstrated at an exhibition last weekend, and they seemed to work OK and were selling well. This was the Falcon Eyes RF-425 set. It was selling for just under €50. :)

Why wireless?

I just got a standard hot-shoe-to-pc converter. Slides into the hot shoe, has a plug on the back. I duct-taped the PC cable to to the adapter and it just stays in the studio. 10-ft (3m) cord lets me move anywhere.

Roughly like these, although a bit different cosmetically:

Hama | Hot Shoe Adapter 1 | HA-6951 | B&H Photo Video

Amazon.com: Adorama Hot Shoe to PC Adapter, Single Outlet without Connecting Cord.: Camera & Photo

Paul Buff products have a great reputation and customer service.

White Lightning: Professional Photographic Flash Units and Accessories

For $130 you can get a battery operated trigger and a battery operated receiver. I own some of their strobes and a trigger and receiver.

EDIT: Realized you are in the UK and Paul Buff has a new policy and is not shipping outside the US, Canada, Australia. In any case they are a great alternative to PW's.

do your studio flash have a built-in slave?use that if the distance is not too great and you could trigger it with an on camera flash. it works if the interior of your studio is not flooded with sunlight

I bought some cheap chinese radio slaves for a personal project a few years ago. They stopped working after ten minutes. Total crap, frankly.

Pocket wizards are great. I use them for the same reason as everyone else. But I can also recommend Elinchrom Pulsars - great build quality, very similar specification to PW's - multi-frequency, multi-channel, same synch speed, trigger both remote flash and remote cameras. But they're also significantly cheaper.
