Whilst in Malta, a straw poll was taken for ideas for the venue for next year's One Challenge, and once again, as bastions of freedom and democracy throughout the world, we agreed to put suggestions to a vote.

So, please cast your vote for next year's venue, which will, once again, be orchestrated and managed by Carl Bretteville. Thanks Carl

The date will be Saturday 16th October, 2010

For the avoidance of doubt, this poll will close on 19.11.2009 at 07:10 GMT

Not until it's available with easyJet out of John Lennon Airport. :D:D

(A joke Andy, a joke !!)

We flew from Mancland this year, and are happy to go from anywhere. Last time we went to Venice, for example, we flew from Gatwick, which is hardly very convenient.

However, we do try to choose places that are as easily accessible as possible from all over Europe. One choice in Spain this time, for example, would have involved a 2 hour car journey from the nearest hub airport, and a 20 hour overall flight time for some people, so a compromise with Barcelona was agreed.

It might be worth next year considering a protocol where the forum as a whole is asked to suggest possible venues for the following challenge, the long list is then published and the top 5 (say) are put to a final vote.

I'm not suggesting that there's anything wrong with what's been done but I think it may be more in the spirit of the thing that the forum decided what venues should be considered, rather than the people who managed to make it to a particular venue.

It also reduces the possibility of a 'skew' being accidentally created by members attending one particular venue, who might represent demographically those who could easily / conveniently get to that particular place, then voting for somewhere that they like or can get to easily.

On the other hand, opening it up to a completely free vote allows forum members who have no intention of participating, the opportunity to send people who do put the time, effort and money into the Challenge, somewhere where they may not want to go.

Venice, although easy to get to, is not by any means the cheapest city for hotels/food in you are after any sort of quality! I had a look at hotel prices on Trip Advisor this morning and ..... ouch!

Having been landed with staying in what can only be described as a hovel on my last visit, despite it being recommended by a notable broadsheet newspaper, you can imagine that I will not be looking at budget accomodation in the future.

I am surprised that Wetzlar has not proved more popular - with the possibility of Factory and/or Customer Service visit(s) on the agenda, but there we go, or rather don't go.

How about doing the opposite to Robert's suggestion (no offence Robert) and allowing only those who have been on a previous Challenge to vote ?

Presumably, these members constitute a high proportion of attendees likely to turn up and would want to expand their experience over convenience. Just a thought. :)

It might - but it's a worldwide forum. Remember the final voting is carried by a majority, which should reduce or even cut out the possibility of an aberrant or mailicious suggestion - there's also an inherent supposition in the current system that the people who attend are the only ones who want to go on a challenge - a wider vote also opens the opportunity to go, to others who may not have been able to make the trip to the current venue.

Here's an example of possible skew - this time round, one member of the German forum was able to suggest a venue. At a quick head count, 14 English people were able to propose a venue.

Ivan, if it's any conciliation I've suggested Istanbul several times in the past.

I know Istanbul had at least 2 votes this time round when names were being suggested. One of them was mine and kept to it.

Had not noticed the top part of this thread as I replied directly to Andy's Bump. :o

It would be a lot less fuss if we just "decided" and told everyone where we are going next year. This democracy thing is over-rated, IMHO. :)

BTW, don't forget that the One Challenge is always out of season, so anywhere we choose should be at its most reasonable, cost-wise. As with any city, if you choose somewhere away from the main tourist areas, Venice can be quite reasonable - the food most certainly is.

The same will be true of Barcelona, and Germany is always reasonable :)
