D&A Posted October 27, 2009 Share #1 Posted October 27, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi All, Was examining a relatively new M8.2 that except for handling and possibly a battery inserted for a few test shots, its virtually un-used. When I went to "menu" to change some parameters, I noticed the menu came up with only 5 or 6 lines...not the usual two pages of options. In other words a single page with approx 6 lines of options, like setting time, date etc...most other were appearently missing. The camera may not have had it's initial time and date set (from apparently being new)...but I don't recall any bodies "out of the box" exhibiting this trait. Am I missing something? I didn't try resetting the camera althoug I doubt that would chan ge things. Possibly firmware being re-loaded? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks. Advertisement Posted October 27, 2009 Posted October 27, 2009 Hi D&A, Take a look here M8.2..Strange...Defective out of the Box?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Nicoleica Posted October 27, 2009 Share #2 Posted October 27, 2009 Is the camera set to 'S' mode? The menu options are restricted in this mode.
Jeff S Posted October 27, 2009 Share #3 Posted October 27, 2009 Is the camera set to 'S' mode? The menu options are restricted in this mode. Some might argue that an M with S mode indeed makes it "defective." Otherwise, a great camera. (Possible good catch, Nicole.) Jeff
D&A Posted October 27, 2009 Author Share #4 Posted October 27, 2009 Hi Nicole, I didn't think so , since at some point I had the camera on 1 and 2 second exposures. If I get a chance I'll look again. I have used M8s M8.2 and M9 but never attempted "S" mode, so had no idea menu limited in this mode. Thanks! Dave (D&A)
jamriman Posted October 27, 2009 Share #5 Posted October 27, 2009 Yea that Stupid mode threw me off when I first got it , and they put it right by the A so it's easy to set it by mistake. If that's not it I would reload the firmware. Let us know.
D&A Posted October 28, 2009 Author Share #6 Posted October 28, 2009 Hi All, Well unfortunately when I went back to look at the camera, it was gone...so no way now to tell what the issue was. I suspect that as was pointed out, the "S" mode was probably engaged....at least I can assume that. Thanks all for all the feedback and suggestions, always helpful! ho_co Posted October 28, 2009 Share #7 Posted October 28, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Well unfortunately when I went back to look at the camera, it was gone... D&A--The camera was gone? Boy, you've got a relaxed attitude! "Oh, drat! Camera gone. Oh, well, won't worry about the strange menu snag." Seriously, turn the shutter speed knob to "S" and you'll probably see the same thing. Then just a thumb's nudge from "S" back to "A" and you're in business as usual! I'm glad it didn't turn out to be more serious!
D&A Posted October 28, 2009 Author Share #8 Posted October 28, 2009 Hi Howard, I think you read me wrong. Its not that I am "ho-hum" about the camera being gone. I was examining it for an aquantence of mine who had some interest and when I went back it was no longer there...probably sold and I'll confirm that later today. It's not the only 8.2 out there and there are others but there was interest in it by my friend. As for turning the dial to "S", I'm not sure it was simply that in the case of this particular body If you re-read some of my posts above, you'll see I took a number long exposures of a one second or two and while the shutter speed dial was set on these longer exposures, the regular menu from what I recall still wasn't showing up. I went back to re-confirm and thats when I found the camera was gone but didn't have time to wait around and ask (pending appoinment). Thanks. If it'd been me I'd be thanking me lucky stars that if it was a problem, it's now someone else's problem
ho_co Posted October 28, 2009 Share #10 Posted October 28, 2009 Oops, sorry, Dave! My attempt at humor was misplaced. My error. Misunderstood your "it was gone" post. And I'm with Earl--if it's now someone else's problem, we'll probably soon read about it on the Forum.
D&A Posted October 29, 2009 Author Share #11 Posted October 29, 2009 Hi Howard, No problem Howard...maybe I took your comments a bit too seriously, but thank you for the additional explanation! I did find out late today it was sold, so no telling if the menue not compoletely showing up was an issue. I was going to offer reloading the firmware. I hate to see someone get a defective camera regardless of the situation, so I'm hoping it works out for the buyer. Some glitches are correctable by the user (like reloading firmware)...some are not....so hoping for the best. Again thanks to everyone with your helpful suggestions. ho_co Posted October 29, 2009 Share #12 Posted October 29, 2009 I agree with you, Dave. It's good that you both saw the problem and returned with a possible fix. A lot of people wouldn't have made the effort. Interesting anomaly, glad to see it posted! As you said, I think we all hope the purchaser got a good camera.
