ezc203 Posted October 27, 2009 Share #1 Posted October 27, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hey guys, I've had my M8 for about a month now. It's excellent. Sometimes I wonder why I ever existed without it. Right now I have a 50mm f/2,5 Summarit and a 90mm f/2,0 Summicron. I'm looking for a new lens with a wider angle and possibly a deeper field of focus. After some very preliminary research I've concluded with the following options: 1. Summilux 21mm f/1,4 ASPH 2. Elmarit 21mm f/2.8 ASPH 3. Summilux 35mm f/1,4 ASPH Also, I was wondering about the Tri-Elmar 16-18-21mm f/4,0 ASPH lens. What's everyone's opinion on that? Thanks, Eddie

Nicoleica Posted October 27, 2009 Share #2 Posted October 27, 2009 For a 35, you might also consider the Summarit f:2.5, it's a lovely little lens. Also, if you picked a 24 instead of a 21, you wouldn't need an external viewfinder.

danyves Posted October 27, 2009 Share #4 Posted October 27, 2009 I suggest the Elmarit 2.8/24mm ASPH, a great lens. My now only lens on the M8.
ezc203 Posted October 27, 2009 Author Share #5 Posted October 27, 2009 I suggest the Elmarit 2.8/24mm ASPH, a great lens. My now only lens on the M8. Yes, that was what I had in mind. Seems more reasonably priced than the Summilux f/1,4 24mm.
ezc203 Posted October 27, 2009 Author Share #6 Posted October 27, 2009 What is the main difference between the 24 mm Elmar and the 24 mm Elmarit? Aside from the f/3,8 vs f/2,8 difference.
delander † Posted October 27, 2009 Share #7 Posted October 27, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) The elmarit 24 is a great lens. I have the 16-18-21 tri elmar but now I would probably get the 18mm super elmar instead. Jeff
delander † Posted October 27, 2009 Share #8 Posted October 27, 2009 What is the main difference between the 24 mm Elmar and the 24 mm Elmarit? Aside from the f/3,8 vs f/2,8 difference. Price I think. Although the elmar is a later design the 24 elmarit has always been regarded as one of Leica's best lenses, but then they are all great. Jeff
Nicoleica Posted October 27, 2009 Share #9 Posted October 27, 2009 Besides the price difference, the Elmar 3.8 24mm is more compact I think (It is also a very sharp lens indeed.)
mikki Posted October 27, 2009 Share #10 Posted October 27, 2009 I find the 28mm focal length also very nice on the M8. I also own a 50mm lens and I find 28mm a good complement to it. (My kit is 15-28-50-75)
carstenw Posted October 27, 2009 Share #11 Posted October 27, 2009 The traditional step down from a 50/90 set is 28, which also allows you to add a 21mm later, and not have lenses too close to each other. 35 and 50 are somewhat close, and 21 and 50 are miles apart. I would suggest the 28mm f/2.8 ASPH, or perhaps the pre-ASPH if you want a gentler, more classical rendering.
johnalex141r Posted October 27, 2009 Share #12 Posted October 27, 2009 I find the 28mm focal length also very nice on the M8. I also own a 50mm lens and I find 28mm a good complement to it. (My kit is 15-28-50-75) FYI; I'm 15, 28, 50, and 90. The 15 and 90s are Voigtlander lenses; the 28/2 and 50/1.4 Leicas. I'd say the 28 focal length is the one that is my "goto" lens. I also have a CV 25/4 and CV 50/2.5; right now these are stored, as my Leicas are still new. The 25/4 was my one and only lens for my M8 for the longest while; it is a great lens; not that fast in low light, though. JohnS.
Guest mc_k Posted October 27, 2009 Share #13 Posted October 27, 2009 Also, I was wondering about the Tri-Elmar 16-18-21mm f/4,0 ASPH lens. What's everyone's opinion on that? lots of threads on the WATE under that keyword
Ecar Posted October 27, 2009 Share #14 Posted October 27, 2009 I'd go for a 28. IMHO, the best compromise in this focal length is the Elmarit. If you want slightly wider, the 24 Elmarit is also great.
ezc203 Posted October 28, 2009 Author Share #15 Posted October 28, 2009 I guess the most popular choice is the 24mm Elmarit f/2,8? I suppose that will be my next lens! Thank you guys so much for all the great replies! LOVE Leica and this forum.
spylaw4 Posted October 28, 2009 Share #16 Posted October 28, 2009 Besides the price difference, the Elmar 3.8 24mm is more compact I think (It is also a very sharp lens indeed.) It is indeed sharp & compact - it has become one of my favourite lenses - beautiful rendering.
LeicaMSeattle Posted October 28, 2009 Share #17 Posted October 28, 2009 Get whatever fits your desired shooting style. My advice would be to go with the 21mm Elmarit, for me it works as a great street photography lens.
