Two quick questions:

a) Can I load LR3 in addition to LR2, so I can use either?

B) If I work on an image in LR3, and then open it in LR2.5, will there be any problem?

I assume that I need to create a new catalog for LR3, and keep them both up to date for a while. Does LR3 expire on a certain date or a certain number of uses?

Yes for a)

B) You will need to import your image separately as LR3 uses a different catalogue. You should find more camera calibration options in LR3. LR3 expires IIRC 30/4/2010 or 4/30/2010 depending on what side of the pond you're on. :)

LR3 is definitely a step upward and well worth trying out.

He might refer to this (curves adjusted to make it easier visible):

What you see in the dark sections is not noise banding but the wing curtains off-stage. The fact that you can see relief in the curtains (the folds) is actually, to me, a testament to the ability of the M8 to render deep shadow detail.

I've not (ever) noticed any noise banding with my M8.

I'm using LR3 and think it's great. I've created a preset that mimics my favourite M8 setting: black and white jpeg with standard sharpening and high contrast. I've never been able to convince C1 to reproduce the look of in-camera B&W jpegs from DNGs.

Anyway, if anyone wants to try it, I've uploaded it here:
