dkCambridgeshire Posted October 30, 2009 Share #21  Posted October 30, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) thanks i'l get the leica pocket book. i found some f 2.8 elmar lenses in perfect condition for less than 600. what is your opinion of them other than they degrade and need cleaning over time? i'l look into all these types of lenses there is no rush.  I'm sorry - I think I've probably misled you. When mentioning the 50mm f2.8 Elmar I was referring to the older 'stretched' aperture 1957 - 1966 version.  There is also of course the later 1994 version which indeed would cost a lot more ie probably c. $500 - $600 and which is a superb lens.  Apologies for any confusion.  I should have checked the Leica Pocket Book 7th Edition myself.  The older stretched pre 1966 50mm f2.8 Elmar is the lens which is known to deteriorate .  Cheers  dunk

It's a very good and compact lens. Sadly it has been discontinued recently in favor of the new summarits. If it doesn't have to be Leica - did you check for the Zeiss lenses? I quite like the Biogon 2/35, and the Planar 2/50 isn't probably a bad option, too.  Have a good start with your M4-2.  Cheers Ivo
dkCambridgeshire Posted October 31, 2009 Share #26  Posted October 31, 2009 With the 50mm f2.8 Elmar late version, at medium apertures, ie by f4, the image quality is as good as that of the 50mm Summicron Mk IV. At f2.8 it is good - maybe not as good as the Summicron - but not that far behind. Being a collapsable lens it makes a very portable outfit when fitted to a camera and just about pocketable if you have large pockets. However, Leica lenses are not just about sharpness and contrast - colour and bo-ke characteristics also define the images.  Cheers  dunk
