padraigm Posted October 24, 2009 Share #1 Posted October 24, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) HI All, I sold my m8 a number of months ago in anticipation of the M9. It appears that even if I had the money right now it would be tough getting one. There is an m8.2 that is being made available to me for a good price. The M8 i had before was a relatively older serial # and I would frequently see the banding at 1250 and above even faintly under certain conditions with 640 ISO. The question I have is I know it the same sensor is being used, but for those who have owned both do you see the later made sensors for the m8.2 having less banding than the M8 classic? I know high ISO noise is the same but if the banding is a little better I am seriously considering just doing with an M8 again. All opinions greatly appreciated. Advertisement Posted October 24, 2009 Posted October 24, 2009 Hi padraigm, Take a look here m8.2 advice Opinions. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Julian Thompson Posted October 24, 2009 Share #2 Posted October 24, 2009 8.2 and 8 are the same sensor. Just pot luck about the lines. Consider: 8.2 does not have 1/8000 which is a very useful speed to have vs 8 is obviously a lot louder! If you shoot theatre or weddings then you want 8.2 but if you shoot outdoor or casual then you want 8. The M8.2 has nicer framelines but it's nothing you can't get used to. Controversially I will say that the Sapphire screen is not the blessing I expected since I managed fairly quickly to scratch mine even though I was super careful with the camera. I think maybe a zip did it or a grain of sand perhaps trapped on my clothes at the beach. Either way it scratched. So using a screen protector with the M8 allows you to keep the actual screen perfect and just replace the protector as needed.... Finally - for my purpose (ie not much travel) I didn't find the M8 brick charger to be a problem - actually I found it better than the M8.2 one because it is self contained and once plugged into the wall it can stay there neatly without dangling all over the place like the M8.2 one did. If I was taking it abroad a lot I am sure I would not say that, however! I've had my hands on 2 M8.2 's and 2 M8's this year so far so have a fairly up to date experience of them. jamriman Posted October 25, 2009 Share #3 Posted October 25, 2009 Has anyone else scratched the sapphire? That's the first time I heard of that.
Julian Thompson Posted October 25, 2009 Share #4 Posted October 25, 2009 Yes, they have. If you do some forum searching you'll find several people who have including one who thought he'd demonstrate the unscratchability to his friend by rubbing his keys vigorously on the screen...except that later, at an angle in different light, he can still see the scratches. The sapphire is hard but not unscratchable. I am not talking about distracting big scratches here, to clarify - the mark on mine was only visible if you looked for it in the light and caught the reflection. You would think that 'only' materials harder than the screen could scratch it. But that's not the case. Anything can scratch it if the pressure at a point of contact is enough. So the tip of a key, or zipper, or a sharp something or other can exert a lot of pressure on that tiny contact patch enough to scratch it. I guess this is why water at high pressure can cut CNC parts. Water certainly isn't harder than aluminium or brass but under enough pressure at a point it'll cut... I do like the Sapphire screen don't get me wrong and I would have liked one on the M9 but 'for the money' it's not worth it in my opinion. The screen protectors on the M8 look fine and offer a replaceable way to keep the camera pristine if you wish. Forgot to mention finish in my M8/8.2 comparison for the OP. The M8.2 black is designed like the MP camera to wear off and become brassed around the edges. If you don't like this idea then don't get the black 8.2 as the finish does wear and shine up very quickly indeed!
jamriman Posted October 25, 2009 Share #5 Posted October 25, 2009 Thanks for info. I just sold my M8u in favor of an M8.2. With the M8.2 I will always leave it in my Luigi case. I'll also use the snap on part of the case that covers the screen. Come to think of it, I have one of those scatch film type of protectors. I thought I didn't need it and was saving it for a future M9. I might as well put it on. Thanks again.
Guest mc_k Posted October 25, 2009 Share #6 Posted October 25, 2009 get a pack of Hoodman Hoodskins to protect the screen.

Julian Thompson Posted October 25, 2009 Share #8 Posted October 25, 2009 Excuse me? I don't like your tone there and I've no idea why you would wish to come accross so rude towards me when you don't know me at all? It would seem particularly uncharitable. I've already explained that I take care of my camera and that I was unlucky enough to put a minor scratch in the sapphire screen during ordinary use. I don't see how that marks me out as someone you would need to 'go figure'? Also I would agree it is an excellent screen - very difficult to scratch unless you're unlucky. But that's it - it's NOT unscratchable.
hammam Posted October 25, 2009 Share #9 Posted October 25, 2009 I think the M8.2 is a ltittle better camera than the M8 for the more discreet shutter, the framelines and, yes, the sapphire screen. Oh, and the black logo. But get a Screen Patronus if you're afraid to scratch the screen.

Nicoleica Posted October 26, 2009 Share #12 Posted October 26, 2009 Well, well, here goes good old HP Don't use HP on a black painted M8.2 though, it will take the paint off. But it will make the brass really shiny.
