Monopod

I just went to the old forum and found out that the forum is closed down. So if you don't mind, I just wanted to make a thread to share information and experiences, as I just picked up a monopod and would like to learn from Leica users. I went to the local camera shop, planned to buy Manfrotto 679, but I was in love with Giottos MM 9160, so I just picked Giottos monopod instead because it was perfect in length both when folded and expanded.

How reputable is Giottos compared to Manfrotto?

Maybe you guys with monopod experience can help me. The last couple of years I've been hiking in the White Mountains in New Hampshire during the late fall and early winter. I've taken the D2 with me. The light in the forest and mountains this time of year is low and I find myself needing a monopod. I have a Linhof monopod but it doesn't do very good 2nd duty as a walking stick, which I also find in need of when climbing snow covered and icy trails. Does anyone have a good suggestion for a monopod that is also a good walking stick?

JohnnyJ, Giottos model has optional pole product that can change from self-standing (although it can't stand alone) from a pole. In my opinion, Giottos is very interchangable from top to bottom. I tried taking pictures indoors without flash and at iso 80 (I forgot to turn off the anti-shake though), but the results were still clear, and of course much better than without the monopod. I might give a shot and travel tomorrow with this monopod.
