M9 at PDN

There were at least three M9s at the PDN show in NY today, two blacks and a silver. After seeing both I am now happy to take whatever comes in first. They're both very nice, and of course what counts is the innards. I offered to buy one on the spot but of course all I got was a polite turndown and the Leica US people professed to know nothing about when any major shipments were due.

They had X1 also but I didn't get chance to handle it. My observation is that it is quite small. I didn't see any S2's but I may not have been in the right spot. They had one last year so I assume the same is true this year. Since the price was announced I have not been following the S2 as it is out of my realm.

I held the X1 at the Photoplus Leica booth today and I really didn''t like it. I expected it to be heavy and to be made of metal. Instead it was incredibly light and felt like it was made of plastic. It really didn't strike me as something that was really special and unique.

I held the M9 for the first time and I really loved it.

It wouldn't be "plastic." It would be some variety of polycarbonate that is used to make unbreakable lenses for glasses. Everyone should be aware by now that the defense department is making an experimental tank made out of some composite "plastic" that tougher than steel, and of course much lighter, which is the whole point if you want to escape or chase down other tanks. Does anyone know anybody who broke their polycarbonate P&S camera cases? That said, I prefer the weight and feel of the Leica 8 (9 if I ever get one). I did drop it on it's bottom cover on concrete the first time I used it. No effect whatsoever.

Tougher than steel. Me thinks not. Im knife maker and depending on what kind of steel we are talking about. Check out CMP 3V:D, how it is heat treated/ tempered and cryo quenched. No plastic is going to be tougher. (impact resistance) than hardened tempered steel. Maybe the polycarbonate in question is lighter, but tougher, not a chance.

They make camera bodies out of plastic because they can tool a mold and do plastic injection molding to reduce cost. What happens when it gets cold and the plastic becomes brittle? Im on a plastic hate right now because the plastic ring in my other wise all metal /glass Nikkor 28 1.4 d AF cracked and broke today. I bought a lecia M3 and a 35 1.4 because there isnt a bit of plastic on it. The worse thing about plastic is for me it has no for lack of a better word 'soul".

For anyone interested in Al a Carte I have sad news. I asked 2 reps at the booth today about the possibility of al a carte for the M9 and both, separately, said they had not heard of any plans for it. My guess is we will see it in about 9 months time, along with pandas, safaris, whites, etc.

AFAIK the M8 and M8.2 were never part of the "à la carte" program.
