milsu Posted October 17, 2009 Share #1 Posted October 17, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have adjusted my monitor to the grayscale chart, but now the colours in photographs look washed, and black is not black but gray. Is that OK? Can you post here some grayscale chart you use for monitor calibration. Untitled Document

dpattinson Posted October 17, 2009 Share #2 Posted October 17, 2009 I strongly recommend that you invest in a monitor calibration device if you care about accurate colour rendition. I have a Spyder 3, and it has made a huge difference to my ability to soft proof and deal with colour images in post processing. Manual calibration of your monitor is really just not going to cut it. MitchoIankov Posted October 19, 2009 Share #3 Posted October 19, 2009 David, is right. I have tried many software only ways of improving the colour but it seems hardware calibration is the only reliable way. I have been using Spyder 3 for more than 9 month (with two different LCD monitors) and have no complaints.
leicamann Posted October 20, 2009 Share #4 Posted October 20, 2009 Ditto the same here..get the Spyder Pro 3.....and yes they have 64 bit drivers for Vista 64..they work fine. If you have a Samsung monitor, remember that you'll need to turn off "Natural Color" in order to calibrate properly. Good luck and get back to us on your results. milsu Posted October 20, 2009 Author Share #5 Posted October 20, 2009 Thanks for the advices. I have a cheap monitor, although it's CRT not LCD, and probably not so good graphic card. When I set higher brightness, I get blurred image. And dynamic range is also poor, as I stated in the first post. So, if I don't get some Sony 21" CRT or the like, I think I won't invest in calibration hardware.
ianman Posted October 20, 2009 Share #6 Posted October 20, 2009 Has anyone got any advice for calibrating the latest Apple Cinema Display ? Yes, it's the shiny LED one, a real PITA to calibrate I believe. Thanks ! Ian

I used my spyder to calibrate my Dell D420 laptop screen (not a great screen) - it was still a lot better than manual calibration. However in your case the price of the spyder might be better spent on a better LCD monitor instead.
