larryk34 Posted October 16, 2009 Share #21 Posted October 16, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) A deposit makes little sense to me if there's someone behind you waiting to buy your camera. It's not like the dealers are ordering a hundred units at a time and will get stuck with a huge inventory of unsold items. They have to buy the cameras with their own cash or credit, of course, but the turnaround time on the sale would be very quick. I've never has a problem with any lens on my M8 by not having the lens coding. I've seen Reid's tests, but every test I've done on walls, grey or blue skies, shows no color problems in the corners at all. I'm talking about the 24mm asph, the 28mm cron asph, the 35 lux asph, and no I didn't test the 50 and 75mm lenses. No negative effects at all. So, I'd strongly recommend simply testing any lens first to see if you need coding, and then and only then worry about it. Now, if I get an M9 I'll certainly punch in the codes, but I strongly suggest everyone take a few photographs of white walls and skies with and without lens coding just to see what happens. I tried my best to find some back focusing too, but alas, I couldn't produce that problem either. I guess I just bought a magic M8.

I agree; I don't understand the deposit concept on something that will spend so little time on the dealer's shelf. Interesting point about Sean Reid's tests. I think it's great that people do this type of detailed testing, as we all want to spend our money wisely. However, many of these test differences don't seem to make a big difference in the real world. In this regard it's interesting to witness the old vs. new Noctilux debate. The old one, it seems to me, is producing more "romantic" images because of some small distortions in the lens. As always, it would seem that the biggest difference in photo quality nearly always comes down to the eye behind the lens...
brt3 Posted October 19, 2009 Author Share #23 Posted October 19, 2009 Today I received the following note from Leica USA's V.P. of marketing. It was nice to get such a prompt response in regards to dealer deposits on the M9, as they probably received my note towards the end of the day on Friday: ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– From: "C.E." Date: October 18, 2009 Subject: RE: High deposits on M9 Dear Mr. T., Thank you so much for your email to our service team in Allendale. I am sorry that you had this experience with one of our dealers in the US. I totally understand your disappointment with their sales policy and ensure you that this is in no way Leica’s policy to do business. This said, we can certainly help you finding a different dealer, who will not charge you anything until your camera ships. Please let me know in which state you would like to buy and I can provide you with a particle list of dealers, who I know will not take a deposit to be on the pre order list. I have informed our President about this dealers policy. I am looking forward to hear from you. --- Best regards C.E.
